Apple releases new iPhone ads, Mac cracks top 5 in France

Apple this week released two new TV advertisements touting the unique features of the iPhone, while a massive spike in French Mac sales helped the company crack the top five PC vendors last quarter.

New iPhone ads again show simultaneous voice and data

Apple's latest iPhone ads again tout the ability of the device to access the Web and remain on a call at the same time. Apple made waves last November when it indirectly entered the ongoing advertising dispute between rival carriers AT&T and Verizon by boasting that it was AT&T's network that allowed the iPhone to handle calls and data at the same time. Verizon's CDMA network is not capable of such dual-tasking.

One new ad, entitled "On Hold," portrays Apple's handset as capable of helping users to be productive or even just kill time while waiting on hold.

"It's kind of incredible -- with the iPhone, I don't even mind being on hold," the narrator says in the new ad. "I can check my e-mail, pay some bills."

The ad shows the Bank of America application, and shows the user accessing the App Store to download and play the Monopoly application from Electronic Arts -- all while waiting on hold.

"I need my iPhone for, well, everything," the ad concludes.

The second advertisement depicts a mother shooting footage of her son taking his first steps. The woman saves the video and sends it to others via the iPhone's MMS functionality.

The mother then connected with family members via a conference call, with the narrator noting the capabilities were "kind of amazing."

Both new ads can be seen at Apple's Web site.

Apple has strong holiday quarter in Western Europe

According to research firm Gartner, Apple shipped 182,000 machines in the fourth quarter of 2009, earning the company a 5.5 percent total market share in France. Apple's emergence in fifth place came as a result of 43.5 percent year-over-year growth in the market.

Apple's success in Western Europe went well beyond France, with Gartner finding that the Cupertino, Calif., company saw a large increase in Mac shipments in the fourth quarter of 2009. However, the Mac maker did not crack the top five in any other countries in Western Europe.

"Outside the top-five vendors, we saw Apple, Samsung, Lenovo and Sony post significant growth compared to an year ago," said Ranjit Atwal, principal analyst with Gartner. "Collectively, these vendors are increasing share and putting considerable competitive pressure on the top-five vendors."

Last quarter, Apple's profits increased 50 percent on sales of 3.36 million Macs worldwide, representing the company's best quarter ever. Mac sales were up 33 percent year-over-year for the holiday season.

Saw the "On Hold" one... thought it was the best explanation on why I need data and phone simultaneously... While I'm on the phone, I run through all my apps and get their respective updates, downloads, etc. I use my BT Headset, so there's no speaker phone needed. Actually, I was offering tech support to a friend, and I had them send me pictures of what they saw on their screen while I searched online, all while we were on the phone. Then we realized "hey, we just did that commercial thing with the data and voice"... yes... yes we did...

Yes, as aggravated as I get at my reception sometimes, this is a nifty feature. A friend will call and ask for directions, which I then look up simultaneously on Google Maps. Or, I will be on hold and check my email.

Wish my phone calls didn't drop so much though \

I want to run iPhone apps on my Mac.
I wish I could run 2 apps at once rather than a phone call and an app simultaneously.
I thought the ads were rather boring but welcome since the there's an app for that campaign was getting a little long in the tooth.

You can, for example I enjoy listening to music from the iPod app, while navigating using Navigon.

The day the worlwide Mac market share reaches 25%, Windows will be history in three years. Only inertia and ignorance maintain the horrible Widows experience when compared to Mac.

Cue 200 comments stating why AT&T are rubbish.........

I love Apple and have 3 macs and an iPhone, but it's hard to justify the prices to non Apple owning friends.

Apple is never gonna be cheap and they shouldn't be, but the price on the new White Macbook for example is simply a rip off compared to the US (yes I know about exchange rates, import duty etc).
iPad, Macbook Pro, iPhone, heck I even have iLife! :-)

I know you have stated this dozens of times... But I think you underestimate inertia and some people's aversion to change. My neighbor was still logging in to Compuserve for his Internet last year.

Even in the most pessimistic outlook for MS (assuming Vista like publicity disasters every year), I imagine they would still be a player in 10 years... Sorry.

Any other examples?

I don't see that ever happening. HP and Dell could barely break the 25% PC sales mark and they make a crap load of machine types going done under $400 in the US, cheaper in other countries and with a excessive bloatware to compensate for the razor thin margins. Apple's just not in that game, and that is before you consider that Apple makes their OS to sell their PCs, not the other way around. It's just not going to happen unless Apple decides to no longer be Apple.

Yes, but you can get sick as a dog and get some of the best medical treatment in the world, while most people in the U.S. would be hard pressed to buy a netbook, particularly after your doctor shoves his hand between your legs and tells you to cough.

There really is a new one born every day, no? In time, they graduate, but someone else will inevitably pop up to keep the inanity alive.....

Sorry for feeding, but in this case I felt compelled, by way of a simple slightly sarcastic response to the Tekstud, to point out that the iPhone, lacking, as we have heard ad-nauseum, multi-tasking, will often double task, and along with full context saving. A method that provides many (but of course not all) of the benefits of multi-tasking without most of the pitfalls.
There was no need to imply that I am a fool, for making a valid statement. This forum is starting to become boring.

iPhone is the No. 1 smart phone in France as well according to Tim Cook.

Maybe someone has more exact numbers of the Mac vs PC share of the computer market in each of the main Western European countries?

According to Wikipedia the first French Apple Store opening only a few months ago on November 7, 2009. There are now 2 stores with a staggering 24 more planned. That would put in on par with the UK, which opened its first Apple Store back in 2004. That is a dramatic change on supporting the French. I have to wonder if the dramatic iPhone sales were the catalyst for this decision to build out stores and the Mac interest among the French.

The only way that guy was installing Monopoly was if he was on a WiFi network. Even with AT&T's new 20MB limit, that game is still too big to download on 3G.

Nevermind....He is on a WiFi network, but what's the point. I'm sure any phone with WiFi could browse or download during a call if they are connected to WiFi.

Very fair point. And please know that I had no intention of making it sound like the person was being a 'fool.' Sorry if it came through that way. It was just a general comment about how there is sufficient newbie traffic on forums such as these that just end up repeatedly feeding those that did not need to be fed.

I've been guilty of it too.

Just had to point out ~ did anyone think of the pun on "cracks"? Given the iMac 27" issue?

Anyway to let you all know, I have been off the AppleInsider grid... Been into some Trance/Progressive music, met some DJs on the scene, met a girl [feel free to say "oooohhh"] and trying to find time for Mass Effect 2 on PC.

Take care.

You will be missed, but I'm sure everyone understands. My vacation keeps getting delayed so I'm a little jealous.

Yeah. We had no doubts either new Apple Stores, having been placed in school campuses or somewhere around there, would work.

We mean Apple no harm.

Bonjour from Paris,

Despite good sales numbers, the iMac introduction in France was a complete failure due to its unavailability and lack of communication.

I placed an order on Dec 10th, 2009 to a major French reseller (FNAC) with confirmed delivery for X-mas and a -10% rebate. On Dec 23rd, nothing. No gift under the tree: failed X-mas

On Dec 26th, I received a mail to tell me the iMac wasn't available and that a new delivery date couldn't be set.

On January 10th, 2010, still no news . So I cancelled my order.

So next time Apple launches a new product, a very strong improvement in logistics, quality and availability will be needed .

Otherwise, Apple would be just another hi-tech standard player with vapourware .

So what's all this business that the iPhone can't multi-task.

Admittedly among other things, I've just read a sports-commentator description of the content of two ads. The mind boggles.

1. Advertisement is excrement. Thus far, the English language has had no need for a word to describe the exegesis of feces. You appear intent on changing that. Why?

2. It's bad enough that 99% of journalism now consists of the quoting press releases. May we now expect the rest to consist of transcriptions of ads?

Worse still, the bizarrely intriguing "Mac cracks top 5 in France" is mentioned but goes unexamined. Is it Mac season in Provence? Or did Microsoft commit some public gaffe concerning wine? I guess we'll never know.

Any chance y'all could write less, better? If you're actually under the impression that more is more, may I recommend a quick visit to peopleofwalmart.com?
