How to find "unusual" files in Finder or Spotlight

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong - but neither the Search function in Finder, or Spotlight ever seems to find odd or unusual kinds of files.

Obviously I know how to search for easy stuff, like a Word document - but when it's some odd kind of preset or preference file for an obscure application - maybe in my user Library, then Search and Spotlight don't seem to want to know. And Spotlight Preferences won't even give me the option of searching in my Library.

Any ideas?

(BTW I don't mean hidden files; just uncommon ones.)

I use EasyFind sometimes but mainly terminal's locate command (locate uses an index too but it just indexes everything):

It does old-fashioned search by iterating folders on your drive rather than using an index like Spotlight, which excludes some folders.

Thanks Marvin. Easyfind is just what I needed.
