Damn.

"What's Opera Doc" is arguably the funniest cartoon ever made.

That's too bad. Old Looney Tunes and other cartoons from that era really stand the test of time. (You don't want me to get started about today's Saturday morning infomercialtoons.)

I remember a picture in the WB store at Mall of America after Mel Blanc (who did a ton of the original voices) died. It had the characters he did standing at a microphone with their heads bowed and the caption "Speechless."

Jeff

Edit-Here's that picture, it still makes me sad...

Chuck Jones was fantastic. I had the opprtunity to meet him in person at a talk he did. I also got to watch WB cartoons on the 'big screen' the way they were originally show to kids back in the day. Quite impressive seeing a carton bull, pissed off, charging right at you on the big screen.

Mel Blanc was also sweet. He didn't do most of the voices, he did all of them.

Great cartoons. Singing frogs, Ralph/Sam the sheepdog and wolf, etc. I always enjoy them.

I've heard that digitized all of Blanc's recordings and now basically use the equivalent of text to speech to do the voices so its still his voice in the new cartoons. is that true?

Maybe? I know his son does a lot of voice overs for the Warner Bros. Looney Toon franchise.

Chuck Jones was an innovator in animation. Brought a lot of elements from theatre, music and film into it. Plus he was a cool cat...he'll be missed.

I guess all that's left are <a href="http://www.spumco.com" target="_blank">these fellas</a>.

Damn.

I grew up on Chuck Jones (and Mel Blanc). That was truly great stuff.

To paraphrase the end of "What's Opera Doc:" "Well, what did you expect? A happy ending?"
