No Wonder I'm Unemployed...

...when there are idiots posting this on job sites...

"Hi. I am a graphic designer but I need a tutor to show me how to create web graphics. I am starting a new job in 2 weeks, yes...as a web designer ... yikes. I told them that I am a web designer because the economy is so tight...but now I am in a bind. I need someone to show me how to design web graphics and how to use dreamweaver. I can pay you up to $750 to spend some time with me and show me the strings. Is it possible to do this over chat? .....apply for job here ...
<a href="http://www.alinkthatdidntwork.com/" target="_blank">http://www.alinkthatdidntwork.com/</a>

<img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> Why did you lie in the first place?
"Tutor" you through chat?
Right.

Anyway, for the f*ck of it I contacted this idiot and stated that I could help (no chat please) in exchange for some print graphic "tutoring". See I really wouldn't lie. My skills are what they are. And if so, I'll learn it myself...

Thats really terrible. I'm currently looking for a job too. I am employed already though, but my contract ends soon. Actually I'm looking in the Philadelphia area, Artman!

I'm a Web Developer though. So we're not up against each other. We should just get together and start our own company. You can do the front end and I'll do the back end.

You know, somewhere in there is a really funny joke. I wish I could just think of it.

After I posted that I thought about it and I figured "nah, no one will comment on that"

Huh huh, he said 'back end' uh huh huh...

I talked to my brother this weekend, and he said that even at the Internet's peak, it only massed for 1% of the total advertising costs. Not really enough to keep any of us employed. I'd be overwhelmed if I heard of someone
getting a web design job in our area. All I see are graphic design jobs.

Face it, Web is out, Print is in*, but it doesn't pay anything in our area, and is extremely hard to get into. When I graduated in '85 with a graphic design degree and little experience with computers, I was getting interviews and callbacks left and right with little effort for traditional graphic design/illustration work. But then the computers took over so I returned to college in '95 to get computer graphic skills. Then the Internet...where I spent 5 years learning that and now have nothing to show the print/graphic design market...what do I do now? <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Which is what I use day in and day out. I've learned as many different languages as I can but ASP is pretty hot right now, so I take what I can get. If I can find a good job doing JSP I'd take it in a second. I'd much rather be using Unix all day than Windows.
Oh well, at least I find coding fun no matter what platform I'm doing it on.

If you hear of any Philly Web Dev/Programming jobs, let me know!!

Go to <a href="http://www.jobcircle.com" target="_blank">http://www.jobcircle.com</a>

Register and post your resume, but create a Job Agent that'll search for matches and send them to you everyday via email. It is the best so far for me. Meaning it sends me matches for web or graphic design...plus a lot more links for developer work too.

Me? I send resumes though and hear nothing back.

But these are legitimate. I check the company/agency web site first and post though their email address.

Also sometimes <a href="http://www.flipdog.com." target="_blank">http://www.flipdog.com.</a>

They will let you customize a search they'll make by sending out a bot that'll return links to sites posting jobs. Just bookmark it and check them everyday.

I've been pondering though what I should do to convince these "We want someone with 3-5 years experience or there's the door!" Print Graphic studios that I have experience, yet have no good amount of samples? Remember, I've been webbing for 5 years...I have a few oldies but what else is their to show them? I can't even get any of them to answer my frikkin' emails, faxes and letters...Arrgh.

Hey Artman
I'm in the Philly area too and I'm in the printing industry. It's great work. Much more secure than web design.
If you can possibly get into print design, do it! You don't have to know anything. I work on making designers' jobs printable and have to deal with designers' stupid designs everyday. And they get paid a lot better than I do.
You want to learn print graphics? C'mon over to my house, we can hang, I'll teach you everything I know (should take about 15 minutes )

You make one good point. That I am not a idiot like the one I quoted up there. But I need to convince these employers. I have done this kind of work. Just not much physical evidence.
The work history I have in print is 5-6 years ago. Would in some circumstances a promo pack in the mail work? I'm working on editing the resume too.

Hey, that's awesome Scott. I grew up in Michigan, and got my Masters and Bachelors from U of M. U of M is a great school, and Ann Arbor is a great town. The only knock on Ann Arbor is the cold winter.

Artman: you need to make a promo-pack for yourself that highlights all of your past wwork and is itself an advertising scheme: you need to sell them on you in the same way that they want to sell whatever they sell.

You should make some nifty package container with stylish color and shape and graphics and inside should be your work set in a visually compelling way: perhapsalso a CD Director peice that manouevres in a hip way through your work: maybe one of those small CD Business cards: You gots to show them that your shiit smells great and comes in a fancy package: and you can do the same for them.

Thanks pfflam. That'll give me some focus. I have a friend who did the same thing but I don't know if it has helped or not. I'll have to talk to her about that.

I know though that those CD business cards are a major no-no. I have another friend who tried that and got a nasty phone call from an employer because that kind of CD crapped his drive (don't try them with slot loaders!).

But still a standard CD package with a Flash presentation and gatefold cover or insert...sounds cool.
