iPad - How much memory is enough?

I know the answer will be "it depends," but does anyone have an idea what the application footprint will be on average. With the iphone we have very small applications that seldom take more than 20Mb, games notwithstanding.

I will be running a few productivity application whenever they come out - omnifocus, iWork, and others. I am hoping the 16GB version will be sufficient and still leave room for a couple 2GB movie files. . .

You will end up using all the space your device has regardless of how big it is. I managed to fill up a 300GB drive on my netbook before I started moving old movie files into archival storage and stopped being lazy.

I have a some large Keynote and PP files with large images or movies. Any of the important ones I'm working on or present often fit on my 8GB USB key so 16GB it shouldn't be that bad.

you have other options if 16gb isn't enough..

wifi external hard drive (my fav. solution)

These!!!! Between home servers and the new AirStash I can't see needing more than 16 gb. Apps are the only thing that will really eat up your storage, and you can be very happy with 16 gb worth of apps.

Get a 16 gb iPad, and an AirStash, and then you can carry around as many 32 gb SD cards as you'd like and connect to them with your iPad at any time. Don't spend the extra $100 on iPad storage when AirStash is so much more versatile and expandable!

Nice commercial for airstash, but let's see . . .

Pay an extra 100 dollars and have built in 32 gb memory on ipad with 10 hours ipad battery life, or

Buy an airstash for 100 dollars, buy a 32 gb sd card (currently running 80-90 dollars), have to charge the airstash each time and carry extra items for that, and have airstash that can only last 4-5 hours on battery.

Suggest that original poster decide how much memory he needs and buy the ipad with that amount. Think that's what he was asking here -- how much memory is enough.

Answer: As much as you can afford.

Even if you don't see a need for it all now, it maybe handy in the future. And you can't add more later, you have to buy it with the iPad.

I've managed to fill about 4 GB so far on mine, which includes several ripped DVDs and some photos, but no music. The applications are the least of the storage considerations. Unless you're preparing to fill yours with video, photos and music, you'll probably do fine with 16 GB. If you're also planning on getting the camera adaptor kit, this apparently also provides access to SD cards for storing some kinds of media, such as video. I have yet to test this myself, but I've read about it.
