Question about US elections from a Japanese friend of mine: Why in the US do people need to register in order to be able to vote?  Here in Japan, all eligible voters automatically receive a voting card with a suggested voting location (nearest school, usually) a couple of weeks before the election.  Elections are also always held on Sundays; it's easier for more people to participate.  Turn-out can still be a bit low, but the intent is there.

The US ambassador's car, with him in it, was attacked by a group of 50 (a later report suggested 30) in front of the embassy in Beijing.  There was minor damage to the car and the ambassador was fine.  This happened yesterday.

- - - - -

A report showed how China has been planning to re-take various islands since about 2001.  They even plan to retake the Ryukyu Islands, one of which is Okinawa, Japan, home to quite a few American bases.

Over the past few years, increasing amounts of land in Okinawa has been being purchased by Chinese nationals and companies.  The ultimate goal of course is to get the US bases out of China's back yard.

Some people today wondered if the spat of the Osprey wasn't actually stirred up by Chinese residents in Okinawa.

- - - - -

The 1000 vessel armada hasn't shown up yet, which could be a point of embarrassment for China as their official radio had announced it.

Their patrol ships are still in the area,  but not causing trouble.

- - - - -

Panetta is still in China; I wonder what he conveyed behind closed doors.  Things changed overnight.

China today sent out messages telling people to show their patriotism through other means.  There was a very small demonstration at the Japanese embassy but it seems to have sputtered.  Japanese schools and factories in China could reopen today.

China even suggested that they might pay for the repairs to Japanese facilities that were damaged during the protests.  This is a first.

Something happened.  My gut says Panetta spoke softly, smiled, let the Chinese general (whose body language was quite dejected) say China reserved the right to do something blah blah (e.g., he let the Chinese save face), but, behind closed doors, he carried a very, very big stick.

- - - - -

Spoke with a guy who follows the US elections fairly closely.  He said that, after watching news recently about Romney that he is scared that Romney, if elected, could start a major war by giving "off the cuff" comments and with his uncertain manner.  He said he was certain this week would have gone wrong.

- - - - -

This morning a news program said that many major US news outlets have move their Asia offices from Japan to China and therefore much f the reporting on this week has been possibly largely through a Chinese perspective.  They worried that the US might not be getting a balanced view of the situation.

Cops leave Beach Park home in shambles after drug raid goes awry:

Quote:
A family is still wondering what happened when a package was delivered and then 10 minutes later drug raiders burst through the front door.

Quote:
“They wouldn’t tell us why they were there,” he said. Afterward, he was able to piece some of what happened together.

A package was delivered, it was about 18 inches by 18 inches 22 to 24 inches tall, by a postal inspector and was accepted outside the open garage by Brown’s son-in-law, Wilmer Aries, 28, who is married to his daughter Ericka, 23, who also live in the home.

Aries brought the package, with a name of someone who did not live there, inside the house and placed it inside the front door in the foyer. It was never opened, according to Brown.

Ten minutes later, police officers with the Metropolitan Enforcement Group smashed in the front door and began ransacking the house, even pulling out insulation in the basement.

“They crashed things, they smashed things,” Brown, 58, said. “You couldn’t walk into a room because everything from the drawers was thrown around and emptied onto the floor.

“The garage door was open. They could have just walked in,” he said. “They didn’t have to crash the front door down.”

In the end, police found no drugs and took the box that police said contained marijuana with them, Brown reported. He never got to see the box, but his son-in-law thought the first name on it was Oscar and some other last name. It did have their address on it.

Quote:
Watching the officers fist bump and high-five each other as they tracked broken glass from the front door through the house also irritated him.

Quote:
“They were upset they didn’t find anything. When I asked them who was going to pay for the door they basically said, ‘Not us’,” said Brown

Taiwanese fishing boats have entered Japanese-claimed waters.  Taiwanese maritime patrol ships are escorting them.  A Japanese ship sprayed a fishing boat with water and a Taiwanese ship sprayed the Japanese ship.  In video on the news the Japanese were trying to be careful not to spray the maritime escorts (Taiwanese government ships).  The Taiwanese did not do the same.

China and Taiwan are using their fishing fleets to do the countries work.  Sad.

Meanwhile, China has applied to the UN for its territorial waters to be extended, essentially including the disputed waters (and Taiwan and Korea).

In comments around the net, Chinese are calling for the nuking of Japan, the elimination of the Japanese people.  Not many, but on virtually every site I visited (Reuters, CNN, etc).

The UN has opened, and Japan's PM will give a speech tomorrow asking (but not naming) countries to settle disputes legally.

You haven't considered the international impact of such an event.  The US is bound by treaty to defend Japan, so any conflict between China/Japan would involve the US. So, I think this is a very important situation that the US needs to consider.

Then there is international trade.  China is a huge producer of the items consumed by the world.  They allowed their citizens to destroy Japanese businesses and factories (one seems to have almost been a professional job including bombs).  This included a factory run by Panasonic, which was personally asked to enter China by Mao himself.

Yes, Syria is important, but Russia and China are helping to create that situation by preventing any international action.

Perhaps it's just that the Obama administration is incompetent, since they declassified documents that name CIA informants.

Individual states should be the one running the show in disaster relief efforts.  There is a role for the federal government in helping to provide resources, but the states are much more capable to handle this kind of emergency response than is the federal government.  Of course, your impression about what you can see in someone's eyes and hear in their voice is entirely subjective, but nice try to yet again paint Romney as some kind of demon.

What struck me was that laws preventing price gauging had to be enacted in some place (can't recall which state).  The laws impact the entire chain, up to the manufacturer.

In another state, the GOP governor got angry with the dems for not passing a bill that would let him fine utility companies for not working fast enough.

Big government is bad.  Private sector is godly.  --- Isn't this the meme the Borg have been projecting?

Why then, do Republican governors want more power to give the private sector a good kick in the rear?

Unfortunately anti price "gouging" laws create shortages of critical items when they are needed most. Sadly most people don't understand this.

Sounds a bit like a straw man. The private sector is not perfect (no one claims it is) or even divine (no one claims it is) but it is better than the alternatives.

price gouging is price gouging. i've ran businesses most of my adult life, very small one's sure, and whilst there may be a need to increase prices at times like this, those who wish to make a quick buck just because they can need to be fucking hammered. I truly hate them. Most people play fair in business, but those that don't are often wildly exploitative and they need a wake up call that brings justice back. `Believe me right now, far from NY I'm taking action to put some of these people in their rightful place.
