Crazy isn't. Doesn't even get that there's no provision for the president to be presenting bills (or ordering Congress to do anything) in the constitutional outline of authority and responsibilities. In fact it isn't even the president's job (constitutionally) to make laws (that the legislative branch) his job is merely to enforce them. But I don't expect Obama to submit to the constitution at this point. He just wants his way and he wants it now and he wants Congress to conform to it. He's an arrogant asshole.

Congress' Job is to pass laws. Obama is not telling anyone they have to vote for his proposal. He is telling them they have to vote on his proposal (which will be presented in the name of a Congressman) or they have to submit one of their own. After the number of times the Republicans have been screaming "immigration reform" (and blaming lack of such on the President) it sounds about right. It's time for them to put up or shut up. Stop the obstructionism.

U.S. retailers can now add surcharges for using a credit card.

To my mind, this is a good thing, since it allows consumers to choose whilst ensuring that credit card markups aren't paid by people who don't use them.

Can anybody enlighten me as to why "California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas" prohibit or restrict surcharges? Is this good policy?

The article lists some concerns, but I don't think they're earth-shattering. Ads can point out that surcharges are levied, and if a consumer wants benefits such as double warranty, car rental insurance, and points/miles/cashback, they can choose to use the card.

No idea, but I'd assume it was to protect some special interest. Just don't know who. These laws also make this whole thing virtually a non-event anyway because Visa/MC have rules in their agreements that say that stores have to do things the same across the country...so any chain that has a store in one of those states would not be allowed to change anyway.

It can't be controlled. No more than the "war on terror" can control terrorism. Decriminalize and regulate. In this country and abroad.

Chinese warship locks on to a Japanese warship with targeting radar.  Japan announces the incident several days later, saying that they had contacted the Chinese side.  The Chinese foreign ministry said in a news conference today that they had only heard of the incident through the media.

NHK (Japan's national broadcaster) raised an interesting point:  does this mean that the Chinese government does not have complete control over its military?

That would be very scary, indeed.

And most Americans say, huh?

Big winter storm in US... waiting for GOPper to build igloo on National Mall and post snickering sign about global warming.  Just a couple of weeks ago data came out showing it was the warmest decade on record... but in some places they don't want to allow historical data because it defeats their position...

Money over people.  Just like what is causing the horrible smog in China that is now making its way to Japan.  The news footage we see of Beijing and other places is scary stuff; the people truly suffering.

Speaking of China, three days and three different stories regarding the radar lock on.

First, they didn't know it had happened.

Then, they claimed it didn't happen.

Now they claim it was a different activity using a special radar but it was not for targeting.

They claim Japan is trying to escalate tensions.  Xinhua calls Japan' activities "petty tricks".

Comments in news stories around the world have started offering the explanation that the Chinese ship was on routine patrol and was being hounded by the Japanese ship and got frustrated.  [This is truly frightening that a captain could lose his cool.]

Do the Chinese ever get tired of the constant stories?

Wonder what the story will be tomorrow...

The pundits who get these facts wrong? Yes, that's ignorant babble. It's their job to know better. If they don't know better then they have no business spewing falsehoods. Berger is simply calling a spade a spade.

And there are plenty of studies backing up the second assertion.

This is not "putting down people" who simply "don't understand". It's stating a truth.

Again, the Germany example was clear.

1. Fox News says, with all seriousness, that the US cannot look to Germany's success with solar energy because Germany is sunnier than the US.

2. What Fox said (to the trusting public) about Germany was exposed as either a lie or simply incorrect. Badly incorrect.

3. BR pointed that out.

How is BR wrong in this?

Interesting to see the recent changes underway at Fox: the only so recent super heroes of the Glorious Right are getting the boot.  Palin, Rove and Morris all seem to have been tossed.

These three didn't do too well during the election, particularly the last two.

I wonder if they still think Mittens might win?

Apparently you haven't been doing your reading. Heads are rolling at CNN as well and per your reasoning, they would have had their analysts be on the right side of the election.

Indeed. I wonder what Berger's analytical take will be when CNN shit-cans Piers Morgan (who apparently has terrible ratings for CNN) who's made himself the high priest of gun control to the point where every discussion he has (even one with John Elway!) finds its way turning toward the subject of gun control.

Your dumb CNN clip cut off Nye's response.  I did hear a "no" right away from Nye right after the question was asked that the anchor spoke over as she continued to introduce him, but your clearly biased source clipped off the rest of his answer.

"China has become the world's biggest trading nation in goods, ending ending the post-war dominance of the US, according to official figures.

China's customs administration said the combined total for imports and exports in Chinese goods reached $3.87tn (£2.4tn) in 2012, edging past the $3.82tn trade in goods registed by the US commerce department.

The landmark total for Chinese trade indicates the extent of Beijing's dependence on the rest of the world to generate jobs and income compared with a US economy that remains twice the size, and more self-contained. The US economy is worth $15tn compared with the $7.3tn Chinese economy.

The US not only has a large internal market for goods, but also dominates the trade in services. US total trade amounted to $4.93tn in 2012, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) with a surplus of $195.3bn.

But like most western nations, the US deficit in the trade of goods weighs heavily and is only expected to get larger.

The deficit in goods was more than $700bn compared with China's 2012 trade surplus, measured in goods, which totalled $231.1bn.

Jim O'Neill, head of asset management at Goldman Sachs, said the huge market for western goods would disrupt regional trading blocs as China becomes the most important commercial partner for some countries. Germany may export twice as much to China by the end of the decade as it does to France, he told Bloomberg.

"For so many countries around the world, China is becoming rapidly the most important bilateral trade partner," he said. "At this kind of pace by the end of the decade many European countries will be doing more individual trade with China than with bilateral partners in Europe.""

Gee, Nye says no immediately while she is finishing the question and then quickly recognizes that some of her confusion might come from meteor and meteorology having the same root word.  He then quickly gets on to discuss the asteroid because sadly CNN doesn't give brilliant men like Nye enough time, and the opportunity cost of wasting it all on this woman's one stupid (and probably not serious) transition just is far too high.  Nye had very little time to promote the importance of asteroid detection systems.

So, in other words, Frank...this is not a case of liberal nonsense but rather unwarranted conservative knee-jerkery.

Furthermore, isn't it interesting how that dumbass website Frank linked chopped off the video where they did?  Seems like there was some vital context that the conservative author really didn't want any of his readers seeing.  I'm sure he knew that without that context, there'd be thousands of Franks to just take the bait and lap that shit up without a second thought.

Finally, I don't see the problem with that story you linked about Nye and evolution.  Nye makes many good points.

Quote:
"If we raise a generation of students who don't believe in the process of science, who think everything that we've come to know about nature and the universe can be dismissed by a few sentences translated into English from some ancient text, you're not going to continue to innovate," Nye said in a wide-ranging telephone interview.

Damn straight.

Quote:
In the video he tells adults they can dismiss evolution, "but don't make your kids do it. Because we need them."

Indeed.  You want to stay stupid?  Fine.  Don't raise your kids on stupid.

Quote:
"What I find troubling, when you listen to these people ... once in a while I get the impression that they're not kidding," Nye said.

This is exactly how I feel.  Sometimes I just step back and read posts by you, MJ, Jazzypants and think, "wow, they really believe this shit.  Like, seriously, they really, really do."
