House Democrats Forced To Move All Their Things Back Into Disgusting Minority Locker Room
Quote:
WASHINGTONSuffering their greatest indignity since losing their majority in the midterm elections, House Democrats were forced this week to move all their personal belongings back into the filthy and dilapidated minority locker room, disgusted representatives confirmed Monday. "This place sucks. We have to share lockers, and the latches on the bathroom stalls don't work so you have to hold the door shut," said Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), adding that the House majority locker room has nice carpeting, leather furniture, places to hang their suits, and a Jacuzzi. "Plus, the floors are always wet, and it smells like piss. Who's pissing everywhere?" House Democrats also reported finding a dirty pair of Champion shorts belonging to Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) and a wall covered in graffiti reading "Fuck Americans!"

Plans being drawn up to let states declare bankruptcy:

Quote:
Policy makers are working behind the scenes to come up with a way to let states declare bankruptcy and get out from under crushing debts, including the pensions they have promised to retired public workers.

Unlike cities, the states are barred from seeking protection in federal bankruptcy court. Any effort to change that status would have to clear high constitutional hurdles because the states are considered sovereign.

Ohhh...now the states are sovereign.

Quote:
Beyond their short-term budget gaps, some states have deep structural problems, like insolvent pension funds, that are diverting money from essential public services like education and health care.

Quote:
Bankruptcy could permit a state to alter its contractual promises to retirees, which are often protected by state constitutions, and it could provide an alternative to a no-strings bailout.

Along with retirees, however, investors in a state’s bonds could suffer, possibly ending up at the back of the line as unsecured creditors.

Quote:
Mr. Maco said the mere introduction of a state bankruptcy bill could lead to “some kind of market penalty,” even if it never passed. That “penalty” might be higher borrowing costs for a state and downward pressure on the value of its bonds. Individual bondholders would not realize any losses unless they sold.

This list is about a year and some the names may have changed, but I doubt by much:

The 10 States Most Likely To Default:
(Well 9 states and 1 city)
  • Wisconsin
  • Massachusetts
  • Ohio
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New York (the city also)
  • Michigan
  • California
  • Illinois

So those places that are becoming more socialist are rising, while those places that are swinging rightward are dropping? I'm shocked!!! Shocked, I tell you!

Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion.

It seems that, by definition, if a country is becoming more economically free it is becoming less socialist and/or fascist since those things, generally, are the opposite of freedom...particularly economic freedom. While it certainly may be true that one or more of the countries who have risen on this index may have implemented some new socialist (or economically fascist) policy, on the net (it is a composite index taking into account multiple factors) it has taken a step away from socialism and economic fascism.

You can read more about how this particular index is created here.

Someone with little understanding of real world economics, someone with only a selective understanding of theoretical textbook economics comprised of writings from only one side of the argument may have trouble understanding how a place can be more Socialist yet more economically free, but the numbers speak more than the theories.

Singapore has higher taxes than the US, 70 percent of Singaporeans live in Government subsidized public housing and Singapore has universal health care. Think about how despite all this, it is constantly rated number one or two in terms of economic freedom and the right wing text book economist just might take their first step toward wisdom.

Should authorities choose not to extend tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003, the tax rate on the top individual income bracket will jump to 39.6 percent beginning in 2011, and the top capital gains tax rate will increase from 15 percent to 20 percent.

As I stated above, this is a composite index. It considers multiple factors. It is not saying that there are not any socialist or economically fascist institutions in place in any of the countries that are considered "mostly free" or even that some countries that have risen in the total index haven't started to implement some new or expanded socialist or economically fascist policies.

It is simply saying is that on the whole, considering all aspects of economic matters...this country is generally free, while that other country is less free.

If you are curious about the criteria they have used to determine the scores, they are quite open about it on the website.

What are you talking about??????? It's gibberish.....

The most fascist regime in Europe in the 20th century was also by far the most successful European economy.

Here's a clue: it does take a little bit of cash to build massive armies, develop rockets and jet engines, wage wars on 4+ fronts at one time all while engaging on a massive development of cities and autobahns.

One could also say that the Pink-Commie-Fag regimes of the present day are bashing America into what I believe is called a 'cocked hat'.

But then some people don't seem to realize that the terms Socialist and Fascist apply to personal ideologies and not fiscal or economic strategies.

Didn't there used to be a 'bang head against wall' smiley on here? I think we need that back....desperately.

Supreme Court: Man can sue firm that fired him in retaliation against fiancée

The Supreme Court ruling focuses on a case in which a woman filed a sex discrimination complaint against her employer, which three weeks later fired her fiancé. The justices said the fiancé can sue the employer for illegal retaliation.

Ruling 8-0. Justice Kagan did not partake in decision since case filed when she was Solicitor General. One time where there was a unanimous decision.

If anything, Canada's becoming more conservative by the day. Harper's done okay, but it will be interesting to see what our upcoming federal election will be like.

Chances are, it's going to get really ugly and personal.

Chicago man wears Packers tie to work, is promptly fired
Quote:
John Stone said that when he showed up at work, general manager Jerry Roberts called him over to his office and then ordered him to take off the Packers tie or else he would be fired. Stone said he thought Roberts was joking and went back to work. An hour later, Stone said, Roberts came to the showroom floor and again demanded he take off the tie. When he didn't, he was fired, Stone said.
"I didn't know you could get fired for wearing a tie," said Stone, 34, of Chicago's Roseland neighborhood. "I'm supposed to dress up. I'm a car salesman."

Lawsuit Claims Taco Bell Not Using Real Beef

We now know the whereabouts of the Yo Quiero Taco Bell Chihuahua

Quote:
A group of attorneys in California claim the ¡Yo Quiero Taco Bell! chain is using false advertising when it says it uses seasoned beef in its food. The lawsuit says they had Taco Bell's meat mixture tested and it contained less than 35 percent beef.
Rather than beef, these food items are actually made with a substance known as taco meat filling (which) mostly consists of extenders.....

Only in America and Somalia-

"Lawyers for a child in Pennsylvania who was 11 when he allegedly shot and killed his father's pregnant fiancee attempted today to persuade an appeals court not to try him as an adult under America's harsh system of juvenile justice.

Unless the lawyers for Jordan Brown who is now aged 13, can convince the judges to change tack, he will be tried in adult court and if convicted will serve an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole. He would become the youngest child in US history to be sentenced to be incarcerated forever.

The US is the only country where juveniles are serving life imprisonment without parole under the so-called "life means life" policy. Only the US and Somalia have refused to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights, which rules out life sentences with no chance of release for crimes committed before the age of 18.

Brown allegedly carried out the killing using his own hunting rifle, a shotgun designed specifically for children. The prosecution alleges that the killing was premeditated and they found residue from the gun on Brown's shoulder.

When he was first presented to court Brown was made to wear shackles around his wrists and ankles.

Horrible thing that boy did killing a pregnant woman in cold blood. I guess the question is, does adulthood start at 18 magically? I don't believe it does and i believe we are raising kids who are staying children longer, which sounds good to the kids and the parents, but I don't believe they are maturing in their attitudes toward others because of it.

I think 11 is very young to be tried as an adult, and i believe that he should be punished for his crime, but not so sure that life in prison will be the best way to help him. He needs to make recompense for his actions somehow, not in prison, but in some other way that shows him the value of life and makes him understand that what he did was horribly wrong and why that was the case. What does something like that look like? Not sure. But spending time in prison with a bunch of adults who are past caring is not likely to do it.

Kucinich Sues Over Olive Pit
Quote:
Representative Dennis J. Kucinich, Democrat of Ohio, has sued a Congressional cafeteria for dental damage he says he suffered after biting into an olive pit in a sandwich wrap. The lawsuit, seeking $150,000 in damages from companies involved with the Longworth House Office Building cafeteria, says the wrap, bought in April 2008, contained dangerous substances, namely an olive pit that a consumer would not reasonably expect to find in the wrap. It says that Mr. Kucinich suffered serious and permanent injuries requiring multiple surgical and dental procedures.

Way to go, let's make our wraps safer. Now if we could only sue Congress.

"Even the best mothers admit to struggling with their children every now and then, but Gladys Bulinya could likely put many of them to shame with her staggering brood.
As the BBC is reporting, the Kenyan mom has borne a whopping 12 children -- six sets of non-identical twins born between 1993 and last year. But the 35-year-old Bulinya, who lives alone with 10 of her 12 children -- six girls and four boys -- in a one-roomed grass-thatched house in the village of Nzoia, says her situation is intensified by a local belief that twins are cursed by a divine jinx.
After being abandoned by her husband last year and disowned by her relatives, Bulinya recently agreed to undergo sterilization, despite the procedure being against her religion, as she could not cope with more children. "I am a Catholic," she told the BBC. "When I made the decision, I asked for God's forgiveness and I am sure God understands and will forgive me for doing that."
When Bulinya gave birth to her first set of twins in 1993, her own family ordered her to leave the babies at the hospital for adoption, as the Bukusu people, to which her family belongs, believe that unless one twin in a set dies, it means certain death for one or both parents. Luckily, Ms Bulinya says, when her boyfriend's father (who is from a different ethnic group, the Kalenjin) learned his sons had been abandoned, he took them in and has cared for them ever since. She met her now 17-year-old sons two years ago."

"An alcohol-detection prototype that uses automatic sensors to instantly gauge a driver's fitness to be on the road has the potential to save thousands of lives, but could be as long as a decade away from everyday use in cars, federal officials and researchers said Friday.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood visited QinetiQ North America, a Waltham, Mass.-based research and development facility, for the first public demonstration of systems that could measure whether a motorist has a blood alcohol content at or above the legal limit of .08 and if so prevent the vehicle from starting.

The technology is being designed as unobtrusive, unlike current alcohol ignition interlock systems often mandated by judges for convicted drunken drivers. Those require operators to blow into a breath-testing device before the car can operate.

The Driver Alcohol Detection Systems for Safety, as the new approach is called, would use sensors that would measure blood alcohol content in one of two possible ways: either by analyzing a driver's breath or through the skin, using sophisticated touch-based sensors placed strategically on steering wheels and door locks, for example.

Both methods eliminate the need for drivers to take any extra steps, and those who are sober would not be delayed in getting on the road, researchers said.

Laura Dean Mooney, president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, said the technology could "turn cars into the cure."

While she did not foresee the alcohol detection system ever being mandated by the government, Mooney, whose husband died in an accident caused by a drunken driver 19 years ago, said she could envision it someday becoming as ubiquitous as air bags or anti-lock brakes in today's cars, particularly if insurance companies provide incentives for drivers to use those systems by discounting premiums."

Didn't see a specific energy thread (and didn't want to derail 'Green Your House'.)

China is going with new Thorium nuclear reactors that seem to be economically viable.

I know nothing about nuclear energy, but I think I understand why the Conservatives here want to unload our state-owned nuclear energy company fast. Developments are moving fast in the sector, and our homegrown legacy tech isn't looking like it's competitive with the future.
