It houses the legendary Area 51, supposedly the site of government experiments involving extraterrestrial technology, a downed flying saucer, etc etc - or as The Fortean Times puts it: "...where various ufologists of variable reliability allege that all manner of naughtiness goes on." Well, it seems that, just after the September 11 attacks, President Bush issued a new 'Presidential Determination' regarding the base. This:
[quote]"...exempted the US Air Force's operating location near Groom Lake, Nevada, from any federal, state, interstate, or local hazardous or solid waste laws that might require the disclosure of classified information concerning the operating location to unauthorised persons...Information concerning activities at the operating location near Groom Lake has been properly determined to be classified, and its disclosure would be harmful to national security. Continued protection of this information is, therefore, in the paramount interest of the United States."<hr></blockquote>
