Okay, a quick summary:
In the late 80s, Dukakis was Governor and ran for President. He got on the tank and ended up losing to George Bush. At a Democratic breakfast last year in Gloucester, he told us that he felt personally responsible for Dubya being in office, because if he had defeated George Sr., you would have never even heard of the Bushes.
After Dukakis, John Silber, who was not such a nice guy, ran for governor against Weld. Silber is one of the people who helped create the terrible situation that MA public schools are facing.
Weld left office to run for Senate against John Kerry and lost. This made Paul Cellucci the acting governor. Paul Celucci left office to be Ambassador to Canada. This made Jane Swift the acting governor.
Before Swift was governor, she was using private helicopters to fly home on weekends, and had state employees babysit her children. It was a fairly big 'scandal' in MA. Under Swift, people who live outside of MA now have to pay their income tax, the cost of state schools has gone up, the quality of public schools have gone down (MCAS), the Big Dig has been completely mismanaged (lots of corruption), and the state needs to come up with $1 billion to balance the state budget, and the only thing she wants to do is cut taxes.
She is pretty much a joke up here any way. It was so bad that the Republicans had to bring back Mitt Romney, who got destroyed by Ted Kennedy in a Senate race a few years ago. Romney has lived in Utah for the last few years trying to help run the Olympics.
Her favorability rating was well less than 30%, less than any governor in the country after 9/11. A total embarassment, it's a good thing that Swifty is on her way out.
