Apple: don't forget to pick up your iPhone 4

Thread Starter
Customers who reserved iPhone 4 at their nearby Apple retail store received an email reminder today to actually pickup their new phone on Thursday, along with an apology for any pricing issues that might have been involved in the AT&T authorization meltdown last week.

"Don't' forget to pick up your iPhone 4. This Thursday starting at 7:00 a.m," the email says. "When you come in to pick up your iPhone 4, you'll be directed to a line for those with reservations. We'll have Specialists ready to transfer your contacts, set up email, and help you get apps so your iPhone is just the way you like it. We look forward to seeing you at the store."

The reminder links to the location of the selected retail store, and notes that reservations are only valid for pickup at that location. The reservation also notes the opening time of the store and how long a reservation will be held at that location, which for most locations is the close of business on June 24.

Sorry about AT&T

"Please note," the reminder says, "some customers received a confirmation email showing an incorrect price. We apologize for any difficulties you may have encountered. If you're currently an AT&T customer, you can confirm your pricing online."

A supplied link allows users to login and verify the subsidy price they will get in on launch day.

"Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store," the note adds in smaller type. "iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Apple reserves the right to refuse, limit, or cancel a reservation if Apple determines that a customer has provided misleading or fraudulent information and/or abused or disrupted the reservation system."

Is anyone else planning on going there for 7am (or earlier) and trying to pick up a phone, even though they didnt pre-order? Im not sure if itll be plausible or not.

I'm going to the Apple store around 5:45 to go get mine, I wasn't able to get my preorder in either

Yup, talk about a redundant email - like I'm going to forget

That's the way it worked with the iPad. I showed up around 10 AM to get my iPad and they had already started processing some of the non-reserved iPads (I decided to upgrade from the 16 GB I reserved and was only able to get a 32 GB - oh well). So, if they have more stock on hand than what was reserved you might get one pretty quick, if you are at the front of the line. Otherwise, you will have to wait until the cutoff time for the reserved phones.

Just wondering why I need to bring my social security number? Isn't a government ID and credit card proof enough?

I hope Apple learns from this pre-ordering fiasco and streamlines the process next time. For example, people could have gotten pre-authorized by AT&T days before the Apple release.

Sales tracked by SS number not by name. Lot's of john smiths, could be 2 john smiths at the same address, can only by one 000-23-0000 on any given planet

WOW!

number from your current carrier."

I wonder if the CA politicians, intellectuals, high school students who walked out during school, typical college knowitalls and general nut jobs in the land of 'fruits and nuts' who protested the AZ Immigration Law, will be picketing this blatant violation of rights, as potential 'victims' salivate over the advent of getting the iPhone 4 when out of the blue are asked "Papers, Please!" by some Apple Genius?

I mean getting an iPhone is more intrusive regarding "Documenting" one self then there ever was in Arizona's lenient law reiterating the Federal Law already on the books that government fails to enforce! What are we paying our political leaders for again? I forget...

CA wants to boycott AZ, Lady (dumb-dumb) GaGa wants to boycott BP, can Apple assure that component parts were not derived from BP's oil? Let's do this right! Boycott Apple people, until we know for sure! Who's with me?!

Congrats to all the new iPhone 4 owners! Enjoy!!

I actually called Apple about the "preauthorization does not guarantee availability" and they said that yes, even though I have a preorder, I might not get a phone. They recommended that I camp out overnight at the store. Excuse me? I don't think that I should have to camp out overnight to get a phone that I have a reservation for!

I'm with ya pal. I'm boycotting ATT anyway. I'm also boycotting the iPad since it's lack of flash makes visiting Lady Gaga's website impossible. Gotta know your priorities.

Actually, to be honest, they didn't directly suggest that I camp out; they said that "Many people will be camping overnight at the store to make sure they get a phone." More of a strong hint than an actual suggestion.

By "pre-order", did you mean reservation? They're telling you that a reservation doesn't guarantee that you'll get a phone? That would suck.
Guessing that I don't need my SS card, just the number. I did have to give the last 4 digits during the reservation and to confirm the price.

And wow, would not want to be part of the crowd that shows up to get the phone on a reservation after they are out. I am hoping that Apple is not that dis-respectful of peoples time.
I was told by the store where I preordered that as long as they get enough stock to satisfy the preorders, everyone will get one by the end of the day. Any extra will be sold to those who do not have a reservation on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have reserved one and show up on the 24th, the only way you will not get one is if the store gets less phones than the number reserved. With all the problems that folks had reserving phones, I can't imagine that each store won't get at least enough to satisfy those with reservations -- and probably more.

Yes, that's correct, and confirmed by someone at Apple when I called. A reservation does not guarantee that you'll get a phone. They said they think they'll have enough phones for everyone, but that since the stores don't know how many phones they'll be getting, it's possible that some stores will have more orders than they'll receive phones.

I would assume that if the store didn't receive enough phones to cover the reservations, they'd probably keep a list of those who reserved but didn't get their phones so they'd be 1st in line for when the next batch came in.

Yeah, they told me something to that effect. Unfortunately, I have to drive over an hour to get to the store, and I can't leave until the afternoon. I was told I could call to make sure they would have a phone when I got there.

You are wrong...the reservation will be held till the end of the day..

Is anyone else having trouble getting a consistent price quote? When I checked with AT&T last week, they said I was not eligible for an upgrade, but I could purchase the iPhone 4 for $399. Then when I pre-ordered last week, it said I would be at $199. Then I used the link in this reminder email sent out today, and it said I wold have to pay $599! No one will give me a consistent answer! Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Pre-authorization is not the same thing as an reservation or a pre-order. Pre-authorization is the bit where you put in some details and they tell you if you're eligible or not.

If you've pre-ordered, they're going to ship one to your door; you're covered. If you've reserved, they will literally put a sticker with your name on it on the phone you reserved. As long as you show up at some point on Thursday to buy it, you will get one. This will be just like the iPad reservations.

Apple stores will have additional stock for those who didn't reserve one, but how many there will be, no one can say. Even the stores don't know what inventory they're going to get until they get it. Now, can we all calm the hell down?
i didnt get one of those messages. When i tried to pre-order for in-store I went through the data plan picking process then when i go to select a store, it just stops there. no confirmation, email nothing. what gives?

The text in the email said that "Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis."

To me, that is distinct from pre-order or reservation and I take it they are referring to the check to see if your'e eligible to upgrade at the reduced price. So, in other words, confirming that you're eligible doesn't guarantee you'll get one on the 24th.

The email says the reserved phone will be available for me till close of business on the 24th. At any rate, I'll know for certain on Thursday.

EDIT: Aduzik beat me to it

So what happens to your reservation if they don;t have a phone for you? does it still expire after 24 hours and you have to make a new reservation?

The store told me that if I showed up on the 24th and did not get a phone because they had run out, I would be prioritized to receive one when they get more. I think it is highly unlikely that stores will not have enough to provide a phone to everyone who was preauthorized for store delivery on the 24th.

Man, yesterday I was having a meltdown when a friend read my original Apple email conformation to me saying the phone was going to cost me $699!!!! I was so afraid that my upgrade status had changed. Seriously my old upgrade date was 4/11/2011 and they changed it like two weeks ago to the 6/24 date. I was stoked. I guess they heard me screaming " I can't wait for a VERIZON iphone chant" I would do about once a month!

In any case, I for one am thankful for this reminder today, I can breath easier and my Blood Pressure is near normal..

Man, am not liking the new price structure though. Clearly to me it's curtains for the ATT iphone only carrier. All the moves lately almost certainly prove that the ATT only days are coming to a close, thank god. The moves ATT made recently first way moving up upgrade dates like mine by more than a year (remember it's ATT, they'd NEVER do this if something wasn't up) then the price structure, then the cancellation fees, and then and then and then... Anyway.

Time to list my 3gs 32GB on ebay for $299. Each time I sell my old phone I get my money back and enough to buy my new one for $0.... Try that anroidettes.

hey einstein, the first two are required for a credit check, and a credit check has been required for any contracted phone since the invention of cellphones [or for home cable/internet, or for a car, a house, a department store credit card, or anything else that involves financing. you need the credit/debit card to verify address and to PAY for the phone, and you need your old cellular account number to transfer your phone number.

Pay the full unsubsidized price for a contract free phone. They need your SSN for a credit check and they need a credit check because you are signing up to pay over $2000 and they want to make sure you are likely to be able to pay.

But what if you're keeping your existing iPhone AT&T plan (no changes) and simply getting the new iPhone? They shouldn't need to do another credit check.
