I would write something along these lines...

Dear Mr. _______

I filled out an application for a sales position recently, and wanted to follow-up and see if you had a chance to review my application.

I'm quite excited by the opportunity to work as a sales associate for <your company>. I also recently had the opportunity to speak <insert guy's name>, about the possibility of doing some freelance work with his company. I'm excited by both opportunities, however, I am most interested in working for you.

Please let me know if you have had the chance to look over my resume and application, and if you have any questions, please, do not hesitate to contact me. I'm looking forward to the possibility of working with you.

<your name>

By mentioning the guy's name, the reseller guy will make an immediate connection with his name. You've also effectively mentioned that you have another job opportunity, but that you would prefer working for his company.

So you have done two things: 1) You've managed to squeeze in the name of someone he knows without doing it in such a way that sounds bad, and 2) You've let him know you have other job opportunities, and that encourages him to want to make a decision.

You may also want to toss in a line in the first paragraph that goes something like, "I've followed up with the store a few times to check on my application, however I seem to have missed you on those attempts". Write something better than that though. You want to show initiative by letting him know you've followed up prior to this email, and you want to let him know in a coy kind of way that you've been unable to get a hold of him each time. But you want to make it sound like it isn't his fault, so that's why you toss in a "but my timing seems to have been unable to coincide with yours." So this might make him feel guilty if he was dodging you, or it makes him feel like his missing you wasn't his fault.

At any rate, take those basic ideas and run with it.

You know, you could always see what medical studies the local hospitals are doing. Brigham and Women's here in Boston is doing a two month long study that pays $1500. It gets better. They provide you with three meals a day, which you pick up daily, for the entire two months. The goal is for you to lose 10% of your body fat.

There is another that pays $80 to take an MRI of you. If you top that off with donating blood, you've done good for the day
