NCAA to stop using leather basketballs (Go PETA!)

Well, the <a href="http://www.peta.org" target="_blank">idiot fruitcakes</a> have <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A16783-2002May14.html" target="_blank">struck again</a>.

I don't know whether to cry or laugh. PETA protests have caused the NCAA to scrap the use of leather basketballs in favor of synthetics.

Thus saith article:
"Jankowski said she didn't know if the new balls were cheaper, but Shannon said it was hard to put a price on a cow's life."

It's not hard to put a price on a cow's life... hell, it's even negotiable.

How long until these morons will start asking humans to commit suicide so we can have more room and resources for retarded albino wombats.

Why don't the rejects off themselves already?

Who cares about basket ball, we all know that soccer's the only real sport.

IMO those do-gooder animal rights activists, whatever their called now, take things do far. Don't rights come with responsibilites? What responsibilites do animals have? Sure they should be treated "humanly", but not killing an animals at all is crazytalk.

I'm vegetarian, but I have no problem with leather things. It would be a waste if they DIDN'T use leather from all the cows that are killed.

I never would have guessed that PETA had so much pull with the NCAA.

Why do I think PETA really had nothing to do with it, and they're just switching because they cost less?

Haha EmAn, you make me laugh.

Basketball's rules make no sense at all. Come on, during gym class, "Hey, thats a foul, you touched my hand while i was shooting!" Come on, how wimpy can you get! Dont even get me started on that reaching crap. In a game of soccer the only time you can get fouled is when your off sides, tackle the goalie after the play, use your hands, or hit someone when your not going for the ball.

Soccer, your running across a field the size of a football field- constantly. Basket ball less the 1/4 the size. Running while being pushed, shoved, etc while going for the ball, then having to think about what your going to do with it.

Then comes my position, keeper. People intentionally try to kick the ball as fast as they can to get it past me. I have got to get infront of a ball going 40 mph and get hit by it, all while people are running into/over/on top of me. Try that in basketball.

So soccer is extreme, and basketball is artistic. Oh well.

I prefer football

I thought of EmAn tonight while watching some baseball highlights on a sports show.

I can't remember who it was or what team it was, you know, since there were 42 games today and all of the highlights were basically the same... uh sorry, anyway... some fielder dove and buggered his shoulder up.

A team of 8 doctors came out to diagnose the guy.

"Yup, it's the shoulder, that's fer sure."

Then 4 guys each grab onto this "man" and carry him to the dugout.

The host took a little shot at him: "And of course, like your typical baseball player with a shoulder injury, he's carried off the field."

I had quite a good laugh at that one. Funny, but oh so true. You'd think the guy blew his knee out or something!

Then you've got guys like Steve Yzerman, can hardly stand up out of a chair and he's kicking ass in the playoffs. Unreal.

Oh yeah, thread related content:

It's amazing how far the freaks at PETA will go. I mean I'm sure they're not all bad, but changing basketballs? Jesus man. James Naismith would be rolling over in his grave!! (and that's a Canadian grave, to boot!)

Well, i don't know the background to this (so i should probably shut up) but it does make me wonder if the PETA has its priorities straight.. Might there, possibly, be more important animal-treatment issues out there (like cow/chicken/pig processing plants)?

Spiffster:

You DO NOT get wimpier than not being able to use your hands.

You can dislike basketball, that's fine, but don't make fun of it for being stupid rule-wise when in soccer you can't use what is arguably the most important part of the human body.

I'm a place kicker on my school's football team and I appreciate the difference...it's much harder to knock in a 40 yard field goal than it is to, say, throw one. Requires much more coordination, your foot is not the most agile part of your body.

Therefore i respect soccer and football more because they require more skill...and don't bring out the "oh basketball players get paid more so they must be more skillful" excuse. That is based on POPULARITY, not the ammount of skill that actually goes into the game. I'm sure cricket requires a lot of skill but I've never seen a game in my life.

I'm not a huge basketball fan. I don't think it's all it's cracked up to be.
Hockey, now that's a freaking game.
There are like 2-3 days between games on an average in the basketball playoffs. Hockey, maybe 1. In the King's series against the Avs, they played back to back nights while the lakers had like 4 fukkking days off before their next. Primadona pussies. Try skating your ass off for 40 minutes and getting banged into the boards. Even football games are a week inbetween. Hockey is the most punishing and yet fluid and speedy game there is, but dont get me wrong ...football rules.

Couple of thoughts:

1. You can define sport as physical competition under specific handicaps: using a racket, stick or bat; using your feet; on skates, etc. What's so nice about soccer/football (the real kind -- where you use your foot) is that it's got on simple impediment and a simple purpose. That's why I like hockey and I don't like basketball or baseball.

2. What material is this "synthetic?" Petroleum-based, I'd bet. One step forward, one step back. Save the animals! Kill the environment! Support corrupt governments and corporations! (You could argue that basketball does that already. )

Well, when you have a bunch of overpaid sissies prancing around on the court, what do you expect. . . . Who does PETA appeal to anyway. . . . (ans: overpaid sissies)
