Microsoft employees hold funeral parade for iPhone, Blackberry

Celebrating Windows Phone 7's "Release to Manufacturing" status, Microsoft employees held a morbid funeral parade for the iPhone and Blackberry.

The parade through the company's Redmond campus, first reported by NeoWin, included hearses, oversized iPhone and Blackberry coffins, and various Halloween-like costumes.

One truck featured a sign bragging, "Windows Phone 7 OS Platform buries the competition." In doing so, Microsoft takes its place in a long line of products that were billed as "iPhone killers."

Various sources have reported that Windows Phone 7, which went RTM last week, will launch at an October 11 event in New York City, although the first devices wouldn't be available until late October in Europe and November in the U.S.

Microsoft posted a teaser trailer for Windows Phone 7 on YouTube last week, the first in what is expected to be a $500 million marketing campaign for the launch of the mobile OS.

Research firm Gartner predicted Friday that the Windows Phone market share would fall from 8.7 percent in 2009 to just 3.9 percent in 2014. Nokia Symbian and Google Android were placed at first and second with 30.2 percent and 29.6 percent respectively. Apple's iOS was listed in third place with an estimated 14.9 percent market share in 2014.

Wow!

Weirdos..

They just embarrassed themselves with that stunt.. Hell the Gizmodo fiasco (although unintentional) was a better publicity for Apple than this one.

Maybe Steve should loan them Apple's marketing team..

That little stunt has Ballmer written all over it.
I guess this is like when the Zune killed off all the iPod's, and Windows 7 and its predecessors killed off the mac OS, and netbooks killed the iPad and stuff...

Microsoft must be going crazy being that far north in Seattle. Maybe it's the rain that put them into a sad mood. I agree with others that this was probably Baldmer's idea.

PS, why not have a funeral for android as well. Or is MS ok with Android being the leader? Leaves someone to copy from I guess.

What are they thinking??!! If Windows 7 smartphones did not meet up to expectations, this little stunt of theirs will haunt them for a long long time.

This is so pathetic it makes me want to cry. No, laugh.

This, from a $200+ billion company........ the third most valuable company in the US!

Take the GUI from the failed Zune HD, take the failed Windows CE base used to build the failed Windows Mobile OS, take the failed Zune music service, and add in the failed proprietary Silverlight platform, and just for fun, lock your phones to the proprietary Windows OS and what do you get? A total failure.

The only thing they should be burying is anyone who had any say in Windows Phone Series 7 or whatever it is called today.

The word 'hubris' comes to mind.

It may be like a politician that screams he has won too soon ... it usually has a very bad effect on the outcome.

This "funeral" for those not died yet spells bad bad bad omen to the one (MS) who parades it.

Tell Steve Ballmer that "The Office" is not a training film?

Wincrapphone7 comes out.

Then the CDMA iPhone comes out. Steals all the thunder.

AAPL up to 300.

MSFT like sheep lead to a slaughter.

Steve Ballmer makes an ass of himself again.

Seriously. How can they not see that coming?
Oh, this is SO going to come back and bite them. : ))

Don't they ever poke their heads above the MS parapet and see what the real world is like these days?

classy, as always

does the kin crypt have some room next to it for the windows phone 7 casket?

What an awful way to celebrate the release of a new version of software.

Is there no respect in Redmond than to take a deeply emotional tradition and use it for pure commercial gain?
Hmmm... it just appears to me that Microsoft have no professionalism whatsoever. Even when they create a product to compete with a world-class product like iOS, they destroy it with this childish and pathetic show.

*shakes head*

Can we believe that 90% of the personal computers in the world run an OS made by people this pathetic and immature?

Microsoft knows that the only time they succeed in a market is when they use sketchy methods to force themselves into it. They'll never 'win' a competition of which product is the best. It amazes me that they even try.

No Android phones at the funeral. Microsoft's plan is to replace Android with WM7 and they can't be seen as attacking the hardware partners like HTC and Samsung that they need to run their software, so the elephant in the room is left out.

Whistling past the graveyard is not normally taken so literally.

"Microsoft employees held a morbid funeral parade for the iPhone and Blackberry"

The real kiss of death is when you label yourself an iPod/iPhone/iPad killer. The graveyards are full of such products. And you know the 'big tell'? It's when they do stuff like this instead of showing you the actual product. 'Cause when they actually have to show the product... well... that's why they say 'talk is cheap'.

Of course, if Ballmer was actually IN the casket, you could say they've actually accomplished something.

Another big, fat fail a-comin' down the pike. Heavy-handed and pathetic. But that's nothing new from MS these days.
