External HD recommendations: Lacie Sucks!

Right..my Lacie Quadra 500 has developed a power failure for the THIRD time... other drives (the notorious Porsche for example) have similarly sucked in a major fashion.

So it's bye bye Lacie...cannot give them a cent more. Customer service sucks too...

Anyway...any recommendations for drive to use with Time Machine?

What about assembling one myself - can I whack one in the Lacie case? Don't mind really but need reliable and cheapish..

Any suggestions?

It's more likely that the board in the case is bad. I've actually saved a few Lacie drives by swapping them out into a new case.

I've been using cases from Other World Computing for at least 10 years now with no problems.

*Note that this is for Sata drives, if the dives in the quadra are PATA you'll have to look at getting 2 of these

Depending on how the Lacie was configured, I don't know if just swapping the drives will allow the volume to mount.

If you've got everything backed up you should be able to salvage the drives as long as the power supply problem didn't screw them up.

Once again this is assuming that you have all the data backed up and are free to reformat the drives.

Like everyone else has already said the OWC stuff is top-notch. I've been using the Mercury Elite-AL Pro for about 9 months now and it's far superior to any other external I've ever owned. I would suggest ordering a barebones unit and throw in a WD Caviar Green 1TB.

Occasionally, OWC has "garage sales" and I've seen them go for $25-30 off regular price.

Sounds like you've been unlucky. I've been using a Lacie Quadra for over a year now with no issues. Probably doesn't make you feel any better, though.

Definitely not - I do feel a little better though that they do seem to be going to replace it.

2 failures on my desktop 1TB. They dragged the service out so that it was past the warranty. Now they won't replace.
Their hardware and service sucks
