How about "Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners, and "I Melt with You" by Modern English! Or (muahahahaha) "I Ran" by A Flock of Seagulls.

The old MTV was a gold mine for these things.

Yep, Dexy's Midnight Runners. Dexy's One Hit Wonders. They cultivated that whole poor "street urchin" look quite well, huh?

And yes, Modern English's "I Melt With You". Great song...still holds up!

Early MTV was THE place for one-hitters! Here's another:

Pseudo Echo: "Funkytown" (not the late 70's disco-sounding one with the femal vocals...these were guys, from Australia - I think - guitar, bass, keyboard and drum. The guitarist sang lead. Great mulletts, as I recall...

Soft Cell. And "Crying" was Don McLean´s third hit.

All time one hit wonder in my opinion should be:

Whiter shade of Pale by Procul Harem.

Ok, you guys have identified some great one hits, especially from the 70's and 80's, but how about
one from the 90's? Maybe it wasn't even a hit, but it was on the radio ALL THE TIME in Boston:
Laid - James.

Also, Til-Tuesday, Voices Carry (maybe that was late 80's).

There are NUMEROUS hair metal one hitters too, but maybe that's another thread. Here's one:
White Lion - Wait

But, in my opinion, the worstest, most dumbest, all your ears are belong to us one hitter of all time:
Rock and Roll pt. 2 - Garry Glitter.
You can't go to a sporting event without hearing that DAMN SONG....
I'll have to think on the "best" one hitter of all time.

Alliance:

One "hit" not one "good song".
Soundgarden had more hits than "Black Hole Sun"... didn't they?

Our Lady Peace rules, don't get me wrong, I love a lot of "one-hit wonders".

Best One-Hit Wonder for me? The Rock Steady Crew with Hey You ... they were ace. Hmm, according to their website they can celebrate their 25th anniversary soon!

I guess it depends on which part of the world you're from...

Hehe, what about worst One-Hit Wonder? I nominate Snow's Informer!
Yeah, Soundgarden rocked:

Spoonman
The Day I Tried To Live
Fell On Black Days
Pretty Noose
Blow Up The Outside World
For one hit wonder of the 90's I'll nominate The Toadies - Possum Kingdom

ok, this brings up a tricky concept. define "hit." is it just a song thats played alot on the radio? cause i hear a lot of songs by Our Lady Peace on the radio pretty regularly. i dont hear Soundgarden anymore really, although its been a lil while since they got big. but my point is, how can u differentiate a "hit" from merely a "popular" song?

Three certifiable hits from "Rubberneck"
"Possum Kingdom" "Tyler" "Away"

--

"Bittersweet Symphony" - Verve

--

Maybe I'm wrong about Our Lady Peace. I'd be glad to hear that they are popular because they rock.

the band "In Living Color" had some hit... something about Charisma . . . . but wowOwow the rest of their music was the worst gawdawful tripe...blechh...couldn't listen to any other song on their album all the way through . . .too bad because apparently they were virtually virtuosos on their instruments.... so said a music critic at the time...

"Cult of Personality" was the Living Colour song, I think. Neat riff/groove, but, I too, couldn't stand their other stuff.

Kind of bombastic and overbearing, and just not my cup of tea musically.

I wish our song Grandma would get some attention. It's absurd, but it's funny. Go check it out. www.mechanisto.com . Hell I know it's kind of off topic and a shameless plug but most the website and all of our album was done on a mac.

Can't be a hit if nobody knows it
I don't want to set standards on Applenut's thread but (ever notice how everything that comes before the word "but" in a sentence is a lie? )isn't a hit usually defined as having cracked Billboard's Pop Top 40?

I like "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds and "If You Leave" by OMD-someday, Molly Ringwold, someday!

Gotta love John Hughes movies!

Maybe a one-hit wonder here but I believe they were bigger in England. Check out "Kick Inside of Me" from Sparkle in the Rain. I just love that song. Sparkle In the Rain came out about a year before "Don't You Forget About Me".

The funny thing about "Forget" was that the lead singer (Kerr was it?) never liked it very well!

They also had Homburg but I´d hardly call that a hit. To me a hit is a song that has at least stayed in the top 10 of the charts for a good few weeks. Preferably a number 1.

Scary.

I think I have most of the songs in this thread, especially the 1980s vintage. Heck, I even had a Joe Dassin song someplace back here (probably
Au Champs Elysée)

My contribution: Pass the Dutchie by Musical Youth.

Now, I have to comment that the Ramones were not a one-hit wonder. Go read a Naked Mole Rat report on the subject, unless you want to be sedated. (Neither was Soundgarden.)

Also, one-hit wonder from what country? Nena had 99 Luftballoons in the US, but quite a bit of material in Germany.

Okay-- for the American-centric:
Kim Wilde - Kids in America

My 2nd favorite 80s group:
Missing Persons - Nobody Walks in LA/Destination Unknown

Random:
Social Distortion - Ring of Fire
OMD - How Bizarre
Tom Cochrane - Life Is a Highway
Stars on 45
(1970s)
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven (you know, unless I write something here, people will think I'm serious about this one.)

Okay. I think I have to go off and have a midlife crisis here.
Die Grüne Hölle - Gute Fahrt

what about "pure" by the lightning seeds, or "I would walk a thousand miles" by those twins, or "rumpshaker" by wreckneffx(sp?), "Take my breath away" top gun soundtrack, or that song by deep forest-that one is awesome!!
What about that song that was about the Milky Way? Was it "Under the Milky Way?" or something like that? Don't know who sings it, but it still gets played on the local 80's radio station.

Did anyone list Animotion's "Obsession"?

Also Arcadia's "Election Day". Arcadia was the OTHER Duran Duran splinter/offshoot group (the first being John and Andy Taylor in the Power Station). Arcadia was Nick Rhodes and that pretentious, smug idiot Simon LeBon.
Under the Mily Way is by The Church who had a couple of other cool tunes, but that would've been their only hit.
