I remember the old "Coke vs. Pepsi" commercials where Pepsi responded with the "Coke vs. a Tennis Ball" commercials. What kind of stupid comparison is this. It's a "no contest" comparison. An iPad is an iPad. The Tab is just a diet cola. Don't waste our time.

I think the price is key.

Every one knows (even Android users though they seldom admit it), that Android is basically a copy of iOS, but sales of Android phones didn't take off until:

- enough time had passed that they could make the copy credible and close.
- the prices started to drop dramatically

Once cheap plastic Android tablets become prevalent, they will take off with the cheap crowd, but until then probably not.

I have to agree with the Prof.

While the survey is pretty pointless (did he really just survey people around his block?), the main point should be that Galaxy Tab is simply too expensive for what it is. Plus, it's attached to a data plan. Apple has priced the iPad quite competitively and it shows.

EDIT: DaHarder, your picture is messing up my page on Safari also. Maybe you could have used a more tasteful font also?

I went into Bestbuy and demoed the Galaxy tab yesterday because I was seriously thinking about getting one. I also found out it is tied to a dat plan , bummer.

I spent about an hour using the thing, my take on it is it is a very frustrating experience. It seemed to me that I'm trying to fight the interface most of the time to get to what I want. It isn't exactly very intuitive. I tried downloading apps and installing them and they failed to install, typing on it is extremely frustrating and doesn't seem very fast, it sticks when paging and scrolling. Also I don't think it is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket . I thought it would be smaller but it isn't really . The criticism that the iPad is too big is I think overblown. All in all I think the iPad is a better deal and I went a way with the impression Apple will do very well with its iPad in comparison.

01 - So you go to retail outlet and expect to be able to install apps on one of the demo devices... Really?

02 - Android easily has the most versatile/customizable UI in the mobile area, and if all you can understand is an endless array of rectangular icons (e.g. iOS) then you should have just tapped the app drawer tab at the bottom of the screen.

03 - Just because you're uncomfortable with the size/pocket-ability/overall function of the device doesn't make it any less viable/ideal for others.

This sounds like more a case of you being completely unfamiliar with Android/store policies than anything.

The thing with the iPad is that most people don't think they need/want one until they actually experience it. Apple has deployed 13 million iPads into the population as these iPads are used at homes, schools, work, planes, coffee shops, etc. they will be selling themselves.

Also don't ignore the halo effect. Most iPad owners I know already have an iPhone. There are lots of Verizon customers who are waiting for the iPhone because they have already been sold on the product. Once they get an iPhone they will be twice as likely to then get an iPad.

My prediction is Apple will sell 30-40 million iPads in 2011.

I'll see your 40 million and raise you 15 million -- Apple will sell 55 million iPads (all gens and all models) in CY 2011.

I don't think the need to understand is required. We just tested what we want to use the device with. If we found it's not that good it's not that good. Very simple.

For those who desire a greater degree of UI flexibility/customization, Android currently represents the most capable environment.

I wasn't familiar with iPad and I wasn't familiar with the Tab. I gave both devices a fair chance and the Tab lost. Again, very simple.

Well, he is a troll. We all remember when he was centering the text on all his posts just to annoy people. Whether he's lying or not, and about what, is another question. But that is the typical computer novice/technologically illiterate method. Look at any newbie's desktop. Rows of icons, all right there, front and center, no experience required.

There's a good reason why Apple chose the arrangement they did.
