Ricky Gervais Golden Globes Controversy

He was amazing last year, too. You hire Ricky Gervais, you should know what he has in store for you.

Hilarious! I love it.

I usually don't watch these shows but, had I known I would have watched this one.

I did hear it was a bit awkward in the auditorium. That's alright, next year they can just pump in the audio from the living rooms of average (non-celebrity) viewers laughing their asses off.

Next year ... Kathy Griffin? Lisa Lampanelli?

Man, I don't watch these award shows because ever time it is just mutual masturbation. This one sounds as if it should be published in its own right as a comedy special.

I have the recording on my TiVo box and in the words of ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd, "That's a YOU problem." Gervais is famous for his no-holds barred biting humor and somehow, the HPFA totally missed what he is capable of doing a stand-up routine.

I want to see Gervais be a guest on the Conan show again ASAP trying to explain that monologue....

I think it was good. It made several people feel awkward, but people need to stop taking themselves too seriously. They are entertainers, ffs.

Comeon, this "controversy" is as fabricated as anything. He already moderated the globe once and he was as biting then as he was this time, the producers deliberately invited him to do it knowing fully well that he would do it again and create a "controversy"... and that's what the producers want.

Let's be honest, the golden globe has a problem regarding the oscar-show, that is so many times bigger and more glamourous and wouldn't it be for these "controversies" the golden globe-show wouldn't be recognized nor talked about.

Job fulfilled, Mr Gervais, see you in two years.

It was though hilarious to watch on youtube. I laughed real hard about this one:

"It was a big year for 3D movies. Toy Story, Despicable Me, Tron. It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional, except the characters in The Tourist. I already feel bad about that joke. I'm jumping on the bandwagon, because I haven't even seen The Tourist. Who has?"

and the follow-up:

"I'd like to quash the rumours that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press can hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish, that is not the only reason - they also accepted bribes."

And he continued that one with the details of the bribes being concert-cards for cher's show and saying: "How the hell is that a bribe? Really? 'Do you want to go see Cher?', 'No', 'Why not?', 'Cos it's not 1975'"

and I laughed hard with a bit of guilty pleasure about these ones:

"I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed [the Sex and the City 2] poster. Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza."

or the one about tim allen:
"What can I say about our next two presenters? The first is an actor, producer, writer and director whose movies engrossed about 3.5 billion dollars at the box-office. He won two academy-awards and three golden globes... starring in such films as "philadelphia", "forrest gump", "cast away", "apollo 13" and "saving private ryan". The other... (looking behind his card, to make he sure he didn't miss anything) is Tim Allen."

Or when he introduced Bruce Willis as "Ashton Kutcher's dad!".

And I laughed to tears about this one:

Referencing Robert Downey Jr.: “He’s the star of Iron Man, Two Girls and a Guy, Wonderboys. Sorry, are these porn films? Kiss Kiss (Bang Bang), Bowfinger. Really! Up the Academy!"

Another golden one:

Referencing Hugh Hefner: “Congratulations to Hugh Hefner, who is getting married at age 84 to 24-year-old beauty Crystal Harris. When asked why she was marrying him, she said, ‘He lied about his age. He told me he was 94′.

He is one jerk off!

Of course he is a jerk, but an extremely funny one, and that is the foundation of his success as comedian, being a funny jerk who doesn't hesitate to say aloud what people think but don't dare to say. And this is what he was booked for by the producers of the golden globe and he did a perfect job to cause controversy and offense, it was hilarious to no end.

He was though censored when he said "For christ's sake", and at the end he managed to show off his atheistic attitude by saying: "Thank God for making me an atheist!".

I see no controversy. He was hired for a job and people hiring him knew what he would do. What's the problem?
