I am leaning towards getting an Ipad 2 so I guess my real question is should I wait a little longer since I do not have an Ipad or wait for Ipad 3 - if it is a year from now I will buy the Ipad 2 - if it is this fall I can wait. I am perplexed about what to do.

If you keep waiting for the next best thing you will never buy anything

Same display resolution
Front cam is VGA, rear cam does 720p video but no mention of how many MP for still shots

It would have been nice to have:

- A higher resolution display
- A bump to 128gb at the high end
- Higher resolution cameras
- Built-in Stereo speakers
- An SDHC/XC card slot for transferring pictures etc.
- A dock port that allows the connector to sit flush writhe the device.
- A design that didn't force one to buy all new cases/accessories.

Overall, this really is what the device should have been at the beginning, and I'm sure it will sell very well.

I'm bummed that the 3G is either Verizon or AT&T. I was hoping for a universal GSM & CDMA. Looks like I'm sticking with AT&T so I can travel outside of the US. It doesn't look good for a universal iPhone this year either.

Other than that, the iPad 2 looks fantastic. I'll need to see how much I can get for my old iPad if I want to upgrade.

Very disappointing - not nearly as good as Motorola Xoom.

It looks like 2011 will be a year of Android tablets after all.

In the computing world, faster processing is indeed incremental improvement. Arguably, it is expected improvement, since many other tablets will have two-core processing.

Having said this, this is a very nice increment.

Apple engineers are no smarter than those from RIM or Motorola. How is it they can squeeze similar guts into a smaller package? At the end of the day, electronic miniaturization is about all about SOC (system-on-a-chip) innovation. Apple does not have magic in this technology inaccessible to others. What they have is a CEO who pays attention to design. When Jobs talks about the liberal arts DNA at Apple, he is referring to his own. RIM, Motorola, HTC and HP don't have this DNA at the top, because the likes of Sanjay Jha, Mike Lazaridis, Jim Balsillie are either traditional engineers or business execs. Steve is neither - just a renaissance man not tied down by his roots.

So yeah, a nice increment. Can't wait to hold one!

Why? The rumor mill had pretty much dispelled all hope for an improved display for this release.

I was hoping for Thunderbolt. But as someone mentioned on one of the many Thunderbolt threads, the iPad doesn't use PCIe so it can't support Thunderbolt. Also, I think it might be too thin for an mDP connector!

If the A5 has the same power consumption as the A4, then what's to prevent Apple from putting the A5 in the iPhone & touch?

The new Garage Band app is going to kill the sales for a bunch of the virtual instrument apps.

And this is a classic Apple quote: "This is worth repeating. It's in Apple's DNA that technology is not enough. It's tech married with the liberal arts and the humanities. Nowhere is that more true than in the post-PC products. Our competitors are looking at this like it's the next PC market. That is not the right approach to this. These are post-PC devices that need to be easier to use than a PC, more intuitive."

This is why the Android, RIM, Windows, etc. tablets will not catch the iPad. It's not the hardware. It's not the software. It's both - together. Plus a liberal helping of "secret sauce".

The upgrades on the new iPad are very nice indeed. I am almost tempted to buy one next Friday, BUT I simply refuse to buy any iPad as long as it MUST be tethered to another computer. When Apple decides to allow the iPad to stand autonomously then I will pick on up. Until then I will keep using my laptop.

I say this because I was out travelling with my original iPad and something screwy happened with the OS and I was forced to reset the entire device. I accepted I would lose the data (backed up at home), but I could no longer even use the device for email or web browsing. I tried AT&T and asked if they would let me reinitialize the iPad (3G model) at their store and they refused. There was not an Apple store nearby, nor a Best Buy, etc.

IF Apple allows a future iPad not require an initial connection to an iTunes account, I will pick one up in a heartbeat to replace the 3G model I sold after that trip. Maybe I missed this and the new model allows this. Can anyone confirm, one way or another?

I don't think they ever say how much Ram, it's always through ifixit teardowns.

that said, expect 512mb.

Yes, an overpriced, buggy tablet with no apps and similar specs to the iPad 2 is better.

You trolls are hilarious (and delusional).

subquestion 2: with the new digital video adapter (HDMI)

So obviously we would to know if I can remove my unlimited data plan ATT sim card from my 3G iPad 1 and place it into my future 3G iPad 2? Then just use iPad 1 for wifi? Anyone know the answer to this one? I ask because I have the unlimited data plan for $29 and want to keep the "grandfathered" plan. Thanks in advance

I have to admit, this is a bigger leap than I expected. Still won't get one until they go Retina, but that new cover alone is testing my urge to reach for the credit card.

Read the website. You can buy it on 3/11/11. Which means you can buy it at the online Apple Store on 3/11/11 or in an Apple Store (brick and mortar) at 5:00pm on 3/11/11. Not before.

Increased storage wasn't realistic. Flash prices haven't dropped and Motorola still can't match apple's price points.

Wow. This is no toy.

A5 processor - dual core = up t 2x as fast

9x better graphics

Video cams.

Thinner.

Lighter.

Same battery life (up to 10 hours).

Available MARCH 11!!!

I disagree. I'll be buying one but I find the iPad 2 and the whole event to be underwhelming at best.

Did anyone catch whether they even included the multi-tasking gestures? I'm so very very tired of double-clicking that home button fifty or sixty times a day.

I don't see this as a big deal. If you are obsessive about it (as I am), travel with a Windows netbook AND your iPad. And a backup hard drive with all your stuff on it. And a Windows install on a USB drive. That way you can recover from virtually any failure.

Look at it this way: if you had no iPad and were traveling with a laptop, and "something screwy" happened and you had to "reset the entire device" (e.g. hard drive crashed), you'd be in exactly the same boat. No difference. Except I wager the iPad is a lot more stable and less likely to brick out than a Windows laptop.

But for people like me who want a small computer to write and test code on the go...it is still a toy. I am "stuck" using a Macbook Air.

also its called airplay if you own multiple ATV's. I am sure if apple created the first ipad with a pico projector, they would bitching it wasnt bright enough in direct sunlight..

the ipad2 looks very nice...no problems there.

i was a bit disappointed when i heard that facetime is still wi-fi only. i know this allows for a better image but if you're out of a wi-fi zone, any image is better than none at all.

it would be great if facetime inherited ichat's ability to display pics and video inside the chat itself. it would be great, for example, to edit together video taken with the ipad2 camera, cut it together, and then show it to my family during a video chat.

finally, while i'm VERY glad to see video mirroring....having to use a wire is a bit disappointing, even with HDMI @ 1080p. i can imagine teachers and lecturers wanting to manipulate a photo or zoom into data without dragging a cord around with them. who knows, maybe it'll get updated in lion or IOS5

I'll wait another year I guess. Not that it's disappointing - but it's nothing revolutionary either.
I don't see any compelling reason to get one. I have a Macbook, MacPro, iPod Touch.
Getting an iPad at this point would just be adding to the landfill more crap that I don't need.

If anything, I am walking away disappointed that my iPod Touch (2nd gen) is no longer being supported... and after only a year and a half of owning it. That's way too soon in my opinion. Not good for the environment, not good for the consumer - good for Apple only. \

Probably no ordering until March 11. Apple may want to maximize the number of iPad 2s sold on the first day and on the first weekend. Pre-ordering of the Verizon iPhone 4 made first-day sales look tepid.

RIMM currently down .1%

This update is impressive. They are clearly aiming to have everyone have a tablet that they carry with them at all times. It isn't quite there, but for most casual users, this almost has the potential to completely replace a traditional laptop/desktop. All it needs is flash support and a couple other tweaks, and I'd be tempted to buy one of these instead of the fancy 15' macbook pro my next chuck of change is going to be doled out for as soon as I determine how much of my life savings I am willing to part with.

If only my old macbook weren't yelling at me about lack of memory every night, I might buy one of these instead and limp along with what I have...

I figured it out by reading the above post.

I do see this setup as an attempt to generate long lines at Apple Store because if you order on 3/11 - you won't get to play with it over the weekend vs. those who get it Friday.

No big deal since I live too far away from a store for this to be an issue - I can wait a few days.

1. I have no idea if I am as COD as you.
2. I have no desire to carry BOTH an iPad and a Notebook. That kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

3. No, I can (and do) carry my back up data on an external hard drive with a notebook and either carry OS install discs (back ups) or, in my case, the installation flash drive for my macbook air if the trip is a long one.

4. I don't carry a windows notebook and I NEVER stated I was using a Windows laptop, so how is this even relevant?

Incremental is a minor jump in processing speed, not going from one to two cores and going from a Cortex A8 reference design to a Cortex A9 reference design as well as boosting graphics performance by 9x. It was an expected improvement, yes, but not just incremental. If you think this is incremental, I'd like to see the stairs at your house.
