2002 Baseball Playoffs thread

It's October, and you know what that means ... playoffs baby!

The Twins committed three errors while handing the A's a 5-1 lead but hung tough and stormed back for a 7-5 win in Oakland. Now the A's have their backs against the wall; if they lose again tomorrow they know they won't get out of the Metrodome alive.

Then the Yankees nipped the Angels 8-5 in a great game from what I saw. Bernie's 3-run homer clinched it. But the Angels played a great game.

Now for the shocker: The Cardinals are pounding Randy Johnson and the D-backs 12-2 in the 8th!

Giants-Braves kicks off tomorrow.

GO TWINS!

The As aren't done yet. Wait till the Twins say hello to Zito and Mulder.

Go Giants...they're going to need it.

That Angels-Yankees game pissed me off. Ugh. I can't handle the back and forth, especially when the forth is in the bottom of the eigth inning by a team that is NOT the Angels.
I will kill Giambi for tying it up. Then I will make Williams eat Giambi, then I will kill him too. Bastards.

Barry is due. He'll get it done this time. And Russ Ortiz is pitching great right now. I like they're chances tonight.

I don't really care that the Yankees won because Roger Clemens pitched a horrible game.

Once again, he chokes in the playoffs!

Congrats to the Cards and the Twins for good victories yesterday. I just like seeing the Twins win because Bud Selig wanted to contract them so badly, just so people from Minnesota would root for his Brewers instead.

I'm also glad that the Brewers had such a horrible record. Maybe they should be contracted, eh Bud?

Even Randy Johnson could stop the Cardinals. This will be an interesting series I think. Can St. Louis really knock out the defending World Champions?

Imagine- none of this would have been possible had there been a strike.

Problem is, with the Yanks he hasn't choked the way he did when he was with the Sox - up until last night, that is.

Want a depressing stat? Roger's worst postseason ERA with the Yankees is almost a full run better than his best postseason ERA with the Sox.

I like the Twins, but I like Oakland more and really hope they take the next three games, or at least win the series.

Yanks and Angels I'd rather see Anaheim take the series, but I've got a lot of respect for the Yanks so I wouldn't mind them winning.

Giants and Braves I want the Giants to kick Atlanta's asses, which they're doing right now.

And with the Cards and Diamonbacks I want St. Louis to win

Yeah, amazing, 8-2 Giants in the 8th, Glavine out after 5 innings. The kicker, Maddux has a blister on his hand and won't pitch tomorrow at Turner Field. This could get interesting.

NHL? Is that sport even still around? I thought they shut that league down cause they couldn't get anyone below the 47th parallel to watch a game on TV.

The series is tied 1-1. Woooot!

Plus, the Angels bullpen has a bit of the Wild Thing look to them.

Alas my Twins were trounced by Mulder and the A's, 9-1. But they'll bounce back in the Dome, Zito or no Zito.

One thing you won't see in the Dome that you saw a lot of in Oakland: empty seats.

Yeah, I used to be a big Twins fan back in '91 when they won the world series (a great series too, not one of those dime-a-dozen Yankees ones). I wasn't too interested in baseball after '92, especially when there was the strike. Now it's cool, the Twins are good again. I think they'll beat the A's. True, the A's are a great team, and there was just some terrible pitching in today's game that they exploited, but the Twins have one of the best home crowds in all of MLB. They usually do really well at the dome (the fact that there are gigantic crowds helps, and they're used to looking for the ball against the top of the dome), and they only have to win two of the three games there to move on.

Of course, once they beat the A's, they'll just get pummeled by the Yankees. As usual. Yawn.

Only games 3 and 4 will be in Minneapolis, Friday and Saturday. Game 5 (if necessary ) would be back in Oakland.

The Twins are expecting 55,000 plus both games. And I've got tickets: I can't go Friday so I gave them to my parents, but I'll be there Saturday.

I remember watching the '87 Series on TV: I was a freshman in college, my first autumn away at school. I watched in my dorm's TV lounge with three Cardinals fans and about 20 ambivalent Cubs/White Sox fans. It still rocked.

Zito is kawazee. 23-5 or something like that. you'd better hope the dome-field advantage can overcome this, otherwise you might see more of Mulder in game 5.

Empty seats? Wait a minute? Which team was almost contracted? Not sure how big the Coliseum is vs the Metrodome...I know both are multipurpose stadiums, so they have to fit bigger NFL crowds...even not counting the retractable seats.

Also, the games in Minnesota are more important than the first two in Oakland since neither team can win it all in 2 games. I wonder what the crowds will be like for game 5, if needed

Not sure how many the Coliseum holds, but they had 35,000 fans there Tuesday and 32,000 Wednesday. I guess you'd expect the football seats in the outfield upper deck to be empty, but a lot of the upper deck seats down the foul lines were empty as well.

Oh well, the bay area has two baseball teams to root for. Obviously the fans will have to be split between the Giants and As. I heard it was a possibility that the bay area would inherit a third team if the As were moved to San Jose and the Expos or Devil Rays don't end up finding homes in DC or whatever, which is currently legally Giants territory. Of course Selig promised the Giants he wouldn't allow this to happen. 3 teams in the SFBA sounds like a bit of a longshot to me though. I certainly wouldn't approve.

Most likely, Expos to DC, and pissing off the Orioles folks.

Devil Rays to ride it out in Tampa Bay another year trying to draw a respectable crowd.

The Twins really fell flat today ... They got to Zito for three runs but Reed gave up too many longballs. They really looked like a bunch of rookies out there today. I'll be in the stands tomorrow for Game 4!

Way to go Angels! They can clinch at home now... it'll be nice to see the Yankees take a seat for a change. Maybe Jason Giambi can watch the A's play in the ALCS in the comfort of his posh living room

That's what happens when they decide to charge $35 for a shitty bleacher seat. The Coliseum used to be a great stadium, and then the Raiders came back, and now sucks ass.

Damn, now that I'm in England, I haven't been able to see any games. I'm hanging on by box scores and the mercury news website for recaps.

Is it too late now?

Angels win series 3-1.
As vs Twins...Mulder will destroy the Twins line-up en route to an easy win in game 5

Braves vs Giants...Livan will choke early and the Giants will make another first round exit.

Yankees vs Angels...decided

And I don't think the D'Backs can win 3 in a row vs the Cardinals.

Angels vs As should be a great series. I don't know who to root for.
Cardinals vs Braves should also be a great series. I hope the Cardinals destroy the Braves.

Eugene you might be right as the Twins haven't handled Mulder well all year. But to paraphrase applenut, I wouldn't count those pesky Twins out yet! (Sorry applenut )

Today's game rocked ... I was in row 28 of the upper deck more or less behind home plate ... we were looking right down the third-base line. (It was $20 per seat, btw agent302 ... could have had $10 a seat if we sat in the outfield.)

The place was packed ... announced crowd of 55,960. The place was going nuts during the big 4th inning,

Game 5 is tomorrow afternoon in Oakland ... all five games have been day games. God forbid Fox puts the Twins on in prime time.

Congrats to the Angels ... although those "thunder sticks" are annoying as hell. (Yep I got my Homer Hanky, but at least we rely on our own throats to make noise.)

One down note: in the 5th inning the place was actually doing "the Wave" ... good lord, I didn't know any self-respecting fans were still doing that. :o Watch the game, fer chrissake!

No denying I wanted the Yankees to lose but I just hate rooting against a team - even the Yankees - just because they beat my guys. I've been pulling for the A's and was kind of hoping they'd be the ones to beat NY. There would have been the subtext of them trying to avenge last year's league championship. Ah, well. Have to give the Angels credit. They just took it to 'em. Go A's.

Go Braves! This is their year, I feel it. Bring on the derogatory comments, but their pitching has never been better and their hitting is about the way it always is. If they can get past the Cards, they'll be in great shape.
