Why the change? The original certainly looks better.

At first glance, I would have agreed but the top one has more detail. It is just a little more washed out - I'm guessing it may be the back of the mountain during sunrise or something. It can be photoshopped to have more contrast e.g:



but then you can end up changing it from being what the mountain actually looks like to something that stands out a bit more. The best option would be to send someone back to Mt Fuji for a better pic. Tim Cook, why aren't on Mt Fuji already?

The COO is probably not the best photographer Apple can get. They could hire or send practically anyone. Any one of the two images would do. I also prefer the first image. I am more of a minimalist, though. But when Lion moving into the cloud they can't help themselves.

Your image with more contrast makes the image look like the beginning of a movie. Neither of Apple's images do.
