macbook fan out of controll

I have had the newest macbook for about four months now and recently the fan started running on high constantly. It is not a temperature problem because my cpu temp is under 40 degrees, but the fan is always blasting at over 6000 rpm. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can try resetting your SMC by doing the following:

Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Thanks, I already tried that. Is there a way to check whether the SMC was reset? I think I'm doing it right but nothing happens.

There's no indication given that it's been reset unfortunately.

Have you installed any temperature or fan software previously? If so, it may be installed in a location that overrides the SMC so the fans keep running high.

Also, have you perhaps done a hard drive upgrade or something inside the machine and forgotten to reconnect a temperature sensor?

If no fan software has been installed and no upgrades done, you can try installing fan control software. There is a package called Fan Control:

It lets you control the minimum fan speeds at all times. So if your machine is sitting at 40C, you can tell it to spin at 1000rpm.
