Apple is test producing iPad

Thread Starter
Taiwan newspaper reported that Invectec (iPod maker) is producing iPad for Apple. It include 10G hard drive and palm OS.

<a href="http://www.oeyvind.org/board/zboard.php?id=MacOSX&no=111" target="_blank">http://www.oeyvind.org/board/zboard.php?id=MacOSX&no=111</a>

I would like to translate the acticle for you, but the wording in the image is too small to read!

The title read:

(rumour of) Invectec received order from Apple
Test production of high end iPad

Translation fromthe site:
[quote]
Translated by Brandon Chen:

Rumor: Inventec Appliances has possibly received a contract from Apple (First line)
to produce a high end handheld iPad, which may greatly benefit Inventec(second line)

Inventec Appliances has possibly received a contract from Apple for production of MP3 players and PDA units. The total number of MP3 player and PDA in the contract may exceed several millions. So far, the MP3 player has been successfully put on production line and available on the market, known as iPod. On the other hand, iPad, which combines the functions of a MP3 player and PDA, is under test by Inventec. The predicted available date for iPad is either at the end of the first quarter or at the beginning of the second quarter(go on talking about Inventec portfolio, stock value and their past business with Compaq)(jump to the fifth paragraph)?

iPad is different from all current PDAs on the market: iPad uses Palm operation system, includes many functions [not mention what functions they are], and also maintains the light and compact design of iPod. However, a 10 GB hard drive within iPad can also be used as an external hard drive (It did not mention what connection iPad uese, but I hope iPad has Firewire.) Therefore, iPad is a high-end model/Rev B model of iPod. ?

(go on talking about Taiwan computer business).<hr></blockquote>

Welcome to the group of active posters, starland. However, Mandricard pointed out that article and discussion on Oevind.org in <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001225" target="_blank">this thread</a> several days ago.

Have you seen the enlarged image that is available? It may be easier to read than the small graphic.

A typo wouldn't mention the Palm OS.

No, I mean that a typo originally got the writer of the article thinking the wrong thing.

On the other hand I remember a Taiwanese trade publication mentioning the 14" iBook many months ago. I think it was a quote from an Alpha Top excecutive. Does anyone remember this?

I remember this. I think it was only a month or two after the release of the new iBook. I didn't remember the exact size though, only that they were producing a larger iBook LCD screen. Everyone at the time thought they were mixing it up with a new iMac.

They will have to compete with Sony's ARM and Palm OS 5 based CLIÉ so they have their work cut out for them...

Man that's the 5th time I've seen that thing today and wow, if it every gets sold..

Wishes:

1. It captures full motion video MPEG-4.
(panasonic has this amazing 4-in-1 coming next month that stores 30 min of video on a 64MB SD card)

2. Has GPRS support and upgradable firmware.
( I want to upgrade to EDGE and 3G without having to buy a new one)

3. High resolution screen.
(OS 5 will allow for multiples of the standard Palm OS resolution, so it could be around 720x540 or so..drool)

That's three... anyone else wanna rub this lamp?

I doubt Apple will release a 10GB iPod. A 10GB iPad is reasonable though. I wonder what all that space ewill be needed for though - it would run OS X nicely, but where's the battery? What's the point, if you can't type&gt;? It has to have really good handwriting recgonitinton if it doens't!

Anwyhoo, Applew iwll not releae an iPod with only double the space of the earlier version. Maybe in a couple years when a 50 GB tiny drive is avaiblale. 10,000 songs in your pocket. E ven better, 1,000 CD-qwualitty songs in your pocket. Then the 500 GB or 1 TB iPod with hologram storage, which will stor DVD-audio files. Yay!

Why not a 10GB iPod? There are plenty of people who have already maxed theirs out with mp3 files alone. Remember that it can also play AIFF and WAV files plus it can be used as a hard drive. I will wait for the 10GB version because I have a handful of albums that I want uncompressed plus files to be stored. It totals around 8 GB currently.

I'd buy a 10GB iPod. I don't think Apple will call the PDA (if ever they make one) an iPad, though, because then everyone would just be clamoring for the iPed (obviously, the long-rumored Apple Shoe Phone) and it's companions the iPud and iPid.

Why not Newton? They still own the rights to the name.

Apple won't call it an iPad 'cause then it would sound like a feminin napkin.

the iPod is already based on an arm processor, so I don't think that would be much of a problem. If they really were developing a device based on palm 5 would they be at a test run stage? I was under the impression that the beta release for developers was not coming until may

With the announcement of a summer 2002 release of Palm's OS 5 the possibility exists. Steve Jobs' and Phil Schiller's dismissal of an Apple-branded PDA last year must certainly have a time limit on it. Didn't they say something along the lines of "this isn't the right time to be getting into the PDA market"?

Now, that was last year. Palm was in disarray, it was a vertical production company with a crowded and confusing product selection. The announcement of PalmSource, the OS-only division of the Palm OS combined with the market positioning of Palm might provide interesting synergies.

The unrelenting onslaught of M$ in this arena might be unstoppable at this point, but nobody can predict the final outcome of this market.

Nokia is trying to get ahead of M$ in the mobile communications industry, but the result of that fortification will be another three to five years away.

Right now, an Apple-branded PDA is more likely than it ever has been.

UPDATE:

Go read this article at <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/23952.html" target="_blank">The Register</a>.

This places real Palm OS 5 cognizant hardware toward late summer or even farther. Like 2003. Understandably, it means a shift in coding. But Palm apps are small, right? Developers may be able to adjust their products within the next six to nine months to coincide with new hardware.

So, iPad in the first half of the year?

Maybe NOT.

If Apple wanted to make something with "i" in front of it it would have to be easy to use correct. So to be easy to use they would put together their own OS. But also to be easy how about having start-up disks. So you can choose to start up as Mac OS or Palm OS and maybe even more than that. And also they would NOT have the iPod look and the PDA (that apple is working on) will be compact a similar look to its cover (similar to iPod) but when you flip the cover there will be a pop down for a keyboard, LCD display that sences how you are looking at it so if it is turn one way it is wide screen. iTunes will be in it along with iPod OS to run music (with visuals). all of this i have proff on and also a program similar to FIRE that runs AIM ICQ MSN YAHOO and the rest.

What is the battery life of the Clie? It looks like the battery is in the hinge which gives it a longer, slimmer look compared to a shorter stouter iPod form.

I wonder if kormac has any news...

Apple announces the first PDB, "Personal Data Bitch".

This remarkable new handheld device is key to Apple's digital hub strategy. If a Mac is the centerpiece of the digital hub, the workhorse of it, then the PDB is the voice of the digital hub. The PDB represents a number of firsts in the small, handheld digital device market:

1. The PDB will nag incessantly about upcoming appointments, so you'll never forget.

2. Miss an appointment, and the PDB will remind you of it for up to 9 months on a daily basis.
3. The PDB also includes features for reminders about taking out the trash, mowing the lawn, painting the shed, and trimming the shrubery.

First ever "nag scale" that lets you select the intensity of nagging. You can opt for anything ranging from a single reminder, to constant, non-stop reminders for a variety of projects and appointments.

The new PDB, always keep it at your side!

On a serious note about timing. If there were a right time to get into the PDA market, and if Apple were going to use the palm OS as their PDA OS, then any pre-OS5 release would definitely be the 'wrong time'. To deliver the kinda integration and multimedia performance an Apple specific implementation would require, they'd need a strongArm core. They can't get that without OS5, and I doubt they'd go with WinCE/PocketPC/whatever they're calling it now. Of course none of this means that the mythical 'right time' is approaching. Even with exceptional multimedia features you still have what amounts to a very expensive calendar.

A 10 GB hard drive? Does such a critter even exist? And why a hard drive at 10 GB when solid state mass storage is available at much higher capacities for low dollars?
