As for the republican field of 2012... hello 4 more years of Obama. I'm not hating or anything but shit I wish he broke a little more with Bush foreign policy/domestic security wise.

That's it? And the tax cut extension that is costing us billions in lost revenue and didn't stimulate a thing? The Wall Street bailouts? Dilly-dallying on DADT (it still hasn't been repealed). Not to mention his first move in office, when Democrats still had Congress, he didn't even present a health care bill with a public option, after all that talk.

And people still claim he's a Liberal. Sammi Jo is right. The establishment pounced and Obama folded.

Pre-blackout I was registered as tt, post blackout as THT. I'm now registered as Shrike after the AI forum software borked my account.

For awhile, I was simply too busy to spend time in PO over the last 5 years and had to cut down my time. Only visit every once in awhile. Also finally getting more time now, so maybe I'll be around more often.

Wasn't into politics that much. I was in the 90s, but age definitely has tempered that.

The wall street bailout happened before Obama became president. Obama did vote for it while in the senate, as did McCain, during the heat of the campaign. But he wasn't president.

But tonton what do you think Obama could have done to enact his plan to let the tax cuts for the rich expire while maintaining those for the lower classes? Do you think he could just sign a paper and make it happen? Congress would have needed to pass it, and that was not in the cards. So then what? The Ds could have let them all expire, and I would have supported that, but that wasn't Obama's campaign promise.

Same with gays in the military (which he did accomplish) and with health care. He can't just make something happen by decree. Congress has to pass it, and Rs were filibustering everything so everything had to pass with every single D voting for it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't criticize him, but you're making it sound like he could have just decided to enact XYZ and he decided not to do it. It's a lot more difficult than that.

He didn't even try. He entered into every argument from the position of compromise. You don't do that if it's the position of compromise that you actually want to reach. You enter with your strongest wants and go from there. Most likely, you end up in a position of compromise, but you don't end up giving up as much as you would if you enter from a strong position of principle.

Sorta.

The money was allocated in fall of 2008 (at the request of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, under Bush with, as you note, the votes of people like Obama and McCain). But...only half the money was spent in 2008, the other half was spent post-Obama-inagural (by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner who was basically a protege of Henry Paulson...in fact Geithner was a key player in these bailouts pre-Treasury Secretary appointment...crap he was President of the very key New York Federal Reserve Bank!)

Obama's just as much on the hook here as Bush and the others.

Respectfully,

My elder daughter is 15 and my benjamine is 12. Except some back problems (sciatic) 2 years ago, everything is fine for me and my family.

Cheers,
Cedric

I'm not really here that much.

Arguing about who was responsible for the TARP bailout is pretty futile in the first place, IMHO. It wasn't the real bailout, it was the fake bailout that got paid back - the public relations bailout. It was the part of the iceberg that sticks out of the water where people can see it, while the real 90% happened down below.

The Fed buying treasuries netted the banks a few hundred billion, because the Fed used them as intermediary brokers. The Fed loaned out money to the banks so that they could loan it to the government at higher rates. etc.

Powerdoc - try stretching your psoas muscle, its what fixes my back every time.
