Microsoft has retail stores? I'll be damned. They must be stealth stores.

I thought it was funny, even if it was a viral marketing attempt. My thinking is it will lead to counter-pranks. M$ had better not be behind it. If they are, they are about to be responsible for millions of AppleTards like us plastering every Windows advertisement with fruit stickers!

Actually these guys are not Pranksters. They are very zealous Microsoft employees.
They took it real serious when CEO Ballmer ordered them in his best broken German.
"We have to stay on top of Apple. We want to put our Stores as close as possible to them".
They just ran out of options.

I can't help but the spinning beach ball on an Apple Store being built would have been funnier than the worn out MS v. Apple feud..

Maybe a little motor behind it to spin the emblem.

I don't know. If they were Apple fans, they would have put "Windows - 2020 version" on the wall.

I don't know of anyone that takes a marketing slogan as canon.

Does Nike just do it?
Is Guinness good for you?
Does Avis actually try harder?
Are diamonds really forever?
Why does Volkswagon think small?
Is Forbes really a tool for capitalists?
Can my fingers really do the walking?
Should you really flaunt it just because you have it?
Will Burger King let me have it my way if my way is free?
Can we not see the beef in Wendy's competitors burgers?

PS: Windows wasn't my idea.

That's an interesting take. I wonder how many slogans can be taken literally?

I guess we can take Apple's at face value too. "It just works" isn't the same as "It always just works" or a declaration claiming that competitors don't work.

Apple never used that slogan. If I recall, that slogan appeared on an internal powerpoint slide from Microsoft describing Apple.

Probably because that's an abject lie, generalization, and subjective.

Really? I could swear I've heard Jobs say it more than once, but that's the odd thing about language, often the perceived origin or words and phrases aren't what we think or what've we've been told. I've heard the show Modern Marvels which I thorough enjoy use false etymology more times than I wish to recall.

it was lifted from jobs constant use of the phrase. this is kinda funny.

"A Mac is designed to give you the best computer experience possible. Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software, everything just works."

while maybe not an 'official' slogan, people most certainly aren't making it up.

He has, as part of keynotes. It just isn't a slogan that Apple has used. Steve has said it, Apple has used it, but it was never their slogan.

Show us proof that Apple fans their product always work? I'll show you a great a return policy, great repair policy and great replacement policy in both contractual and anecdotal form, which is just a small part of why Apple is popular, successful and their TCO is often lower than competitor products.

PS: Dealing with faulty 3rd-part RAM right now. Should have paid the extra $40 for Apple's OEM RAM so now I am paying $60 for new RAM because the effort plus cost to ship in the faulty RAM exceeds its utility.

In contrast to the small, upstart company that Apple used to be.

Honestly, I think the "Apple i the next Microsoft" meme is a terrible one. What made Microsoft, Microsoft, was its dependence on monopolies to make money. For example, the Netscape killing was necessary for them not because the internet threatened Windows, as a platform, so they were trying to establish IE as the internet platform (hence all the proprietary ActiveX stuff). This was achieved by giving things away for free, so as to undercut existing, upcoming businesses.

Apple does not do that. Most of their decisions are driven by their belief that it will be a better product, rather than to entrench a monopoly (which they don't have anywhere, except music players, which are not a platform anyways, so its not comparable).

The true "next Microsoft" is clearly Google. They kill competition in nearly every business, that might even slightly threaten their Web Ads money-machine by giving away stuff for free. What else does anyone think Google Docs, Google Voice, Android, etc. are (I am limiting this only to examples where Google purchased an existing product that people were paying for, and made free to entrench their web monopoly). All of Google's efforts are directed towards one thing, and one thing only. Making sure people click on Google Adsense banners. Now that, is true Microsoftian efforts.

Classic example is the "you're holding it wrong" meme. Almost everyone who uses it, thinks Steve Jobs went on a keynote, and said it. In reality, an Engadget reader claimed that Steve Jobs sent him an email with that message.

Well, they did hire the same guy who designed Apple's stores (who was the same guy who designed Gap's stores, which actually do look kinda similar, but thats irrelevant, since the genius of Apple stores are not the look, but the existence of the theater, the Genius bar, the ability to simply go there and browse the internet without being pestered).

I am not sure if you can call it "stealing" but I am sure what it is, is freakin moronic. Why in the world did MS think that coming across as a cheap knockoff of iconic Apple stores is a good idea is beyond me. And the worst part is that they left out the best parts of what makes the Apple Store, the Apple Store.

no i don't need any proof. i have to deal with Apple products and MS products all day. i know exactly what issues can and do arise. i am well versed in apple warranty (nothing special about it) vs pc vendors (dell complete care is the best). drop your expensive mac and go sob into your pillow.

why did you go the cheap route to begin with? aren't all apple owners made of money? lol

Technology in what context?

If it's in the interest of ease of use? Than I can agree with you to an extended point.

If it's to deal with the Raw tech however? You've got it backwards.

What can I say? My Apple computer gets turned off maybe ten times a year. It only needs to be restarted for very rare updates. With my Microsoft machines if I don't restart them every day they begin to crawl. The anti-virus software and Microsoft updates come out almost every other day and require restarting the thing. Sometimes multiple times per day.

I need to keep the Task Manager open all the time because when browsers or programs freeze it is easier to turn them off by ending the process. If the Task Manager weren't open I wouldn't be able to shut down the program without doing a hard shut down. I don't run obscure programs or mess with the registry. Microsoft screws up those things on its own and doesn't need my help to make it run worse.

If I ever add a peripheral device on the Microsoft box I need to find the CD and load the software. Often it takes a long time to follow the set-up procedures. The Apple computer has always had the peripheral software pre-installed. Usually it recognizes the device. Sometimes it needs to check for updates for it and within a minute the device is working.

Too many programs attach themselves to the start up menu in Windows. Every coupe of weeks I need to run MSCONFIG and un-check tons of programs that cause the start-up to take five minutes.

Deleting malfunctioning programs on Windows often is difficult. Due to the malfunction the uninstall button doesn't work. Somehow the uninstall wizard can't locate the malfunctioning program. So far I've not had to uninstall anything and reinstall it on the Apple computer.

So am I "buying into it..." or is this real world experience?

Ubuntu is faster than Windows in every way. It is faster than Leopard in some ways. It is really easy to use. I would say it's easier to use than Leopard. The only problem with it is the initial setup. That takes a long time. Then again, it's FREE.

Out of curiosity, what version of MS's OS are you running?

Now Point by Point Analysis

1. Welcome to the wonderful world of UNIX systems. They don't need to be restarted for updates UNLESS the Kernel is being changed.

2. What browsers are you using? IE is unstable and Firefox is a bit of a resource hog. If your having problems with Chrome or Opera, check em out because I have not had any crashes with either.

3. Agree that it's annoying to have to have the CD to setup many things on windows. The instructions however are relatively simple. It doesn't take seconds or minutes, but should never take you more than an hour.

4.UGHHH, My Little sister put all kinds of MSN, AIM, and Oovoo crap on my computer, I can feel your pain on this one

5. If your uninstalling with a malfunctioning Uninstall function? Yes, it's a pain. The weird thing is the only thing I couldn't uninstall was Apple software update which I have NO use for on my PC(Little sister thing again )

Just my thoughts
That was funny but may not be too far off from what the future may hold. If Microsoft keeps blundering on the mobile device front then they'll be left with their Server OS as the growth segment. Their consumer/desktop segment will wither away. Microsoft may have to support Linux and Mac OS clients for their server.

I don't mean to question your authority but....

What the hell do you need 6 cores and 12GB of Ram for? What do you do? Simulate weather patterns? NASA? Military? That's a waste of money for person use.

I mainly use a 1.8Ghz Dual core laptop, with 3GB of RAM and I can have Flash,Dreamweaver,Photoshop,After Effects, and Audition open at the same time without a problem.
