That background? Just tiled with a great-looking gradient applied to it. I'm sure it's HTML5.

There are also other clever features that go above and beyond what I typically expect from any web developer, including Apple. For instnance:

I'm a bit disappointed by pricing. It would be perfect if it's just the opposite: $10, $20 and $50 for 20, 40, and 100 GB. but a lof of things don't count toward this space so I guess I should try and see how much I really need.
For people who laments the end of iDisk and Gallery please keep in mind that this is only iCloud1.0. I'm sure it will be updated and features will be added regularly just like iOS and OSX.

You guys are missing the point. This is about my emaiil address not my AppleID.

My email address is FirstName@LastName.me. I have no problems using that as my AppleID but as far as email addresses go, Apple forces you to use the UserName@me.com format which I don't want to use because I already have an email address that I'm happy with. And I don't want to mess with forwarding or any of that nonsense.

To put it another way, Google and Microsoft let you use any domain you'd like, not just @gmail.com and @hotmail.com. This is why iCloud is useless to me because it requires me to change my email address to @me.com.

I have a Yahoo and Gmail account that I use just fine along with my me.com address, on my Mac, iPhone, and iPad. You are just getting an additional email address. It doesn't mean you have to use it.

I am currently on mobileme and if I am reading Apple's website correctly, if I try icloud then I lose all mobileme services. I already know gallery, idisk and web hosting is gone (and I use those services monthly). Finding another webhost should be fairly easy and idisk could possibly be redundant with icloud. Is there really any advantage to jump ship or should I wait until next June when my service is EOL'd?

You can try it out. If you are running iOS 5.0 betas on any of your devices you can create up to 3 or 4 accounts on each device.

Or you'll have to wait until iOS 5.0 is officially out so you can create a free account to test it out. You can then sync all your Macs information to that iCloud account. This is how I'm doing it since it won't yet let me move my account.

Regardless, you should be thinking about alternatives since you have under a year before your MobileMe account is automatically moved to iCloud.

I gotcha. Thanks for clarifying. You're correct, to use the webmail interface you have to have a .me account. I don't think that's a bug, I think they just never expected anyone to want it for anything else. It's not an email aggregator: it's a web client for their specific service. You've got to have someone already hosting your email, so they would be from whom you'd check your email online. I wouldn't expect Apple to build this functionality in anytime soon.

Thanks for the tip! Not a dev and just waiting for official release. That sounds doable to get my feet wet when it comes out and then decide how and when to move everything over.

Slightly off topic, but I LOVE the new Apple TV update. I had my hardrive stolen years ago with iTunes purchases and they showed right up. Awesome!

I had been stating that since the iTunes Music Store went live. In order to get people to trust online purchases of media they need to have a way to re-download the content again. Now we just need movies to enter that list and we'll have a complete set*.


* I hear that not all TV shows are available which I interpret to mean they have no deals with certain content owners. I hope that will eventually change.

i thought it was obvious but the goal here to have all of my services under one roof, not scattered all over creation. that means 1 email account, 1 calendar, blah yadda etc. i'm looking for 1 stop shopping here and as of now, the only company that can do that is Microsoft with their SkyDrive.

I am still taken by the fact that when I signed up for Mobile Me I couldn't merge my accounts and had to keep using my old account so that I wouldn't lose my purchases. It doesn't look like they are going to fix this any time soon. Having said that (please bear with me as I am a newbie) How is that going to affect me with ICloud? Meaning I want to sync all my mail, contacts, calendars, notes etc. I also want to sync my Itunes media. Will I have to log in twice on Icloud? How about apps like Pages? I downloaded it from the app store with my old apple id so how would that affect me if i am using mobile me to log in? Like I said I am a newbie so sorry for the stupid questions

that's interesting because I stopped using my old sbcglobal.net apple id over a year ago and yet i can still log in and redownload the music etc that I bought with it.

yes but you can't download those purchases using a mobile me account (since it became an apple id as well) What I want to do is have one log in for everything (info and media) using my @me account WITHOUT losing my purchases from my old account. I am not sure if I am making sense here.

On a related note, if anyone happens to have the iCloud account associated with penis@me.com, I used your ID to login there. It just said "you don't have blah blah blah" but it did redirect to the page afterward, so they have that ID on file now.

I'm been playing around with iCloud.com and it's very well done. There are some kinks that make it not ready for launch just yet but they put an amazing fit and finish on the site. All the other tie-ins to iOS, Mac OS, and Windows are going to make this service indispensable.

One service I'd like to see is iTunes for iCloud that ties into your iTunes Store purchases for streaming or gives you access to your complete iTunes catalog if you sign up for iTunes Match.

I'm buying a Macbook Air soon and I really want to keep it lean and mean which means I'd love to be able to stream content to it rather than take up 30GB of SSD storage for music that I may rarely listen to.

2) I wonder how in-depth the iCloud APIs are iOS and Mac OS. IOW, I wonder if a developer could release a Mac app that works much like Dropbox or iDisk but with tie ins to stream your audio and video from your iCloud storage. For your 30GB that would mean buying the 50GB package at $100 a year but it would an option. Hopefully iTunes Match will have web or iTunes access come the Autumn event so you won't have to wait for a decent option.

That's what I keep testing. You can play podcasts at full length, so I'm hoping that eventually this functionality branches out into the music and video portions of the store.

I also can't find any use of Flash on iCloud.com. I know, I know many of you are saying "duh!" but MobileMe's site did and still does use Flash for uploading and downloading files. It's how it accesses the local file system. Not so with iCloud.com.

I so freaking fuckly hope that will be the case! The integration of Gallery & Aperture is so much appreciated and used by me I cannot explain the easiness to a non Mac user. Than again, I don't talk that much to non Mac users - LOL.

But I will need to explore the other photo sharing sites as I don't want to wake up & realize it is June 30, 2012 already. If anything, I'll buy a new MacMini, create a website and do my own photo sharing.

That's a good tip: create a test account and simply copy over (some) data to test iCloud but still retain MobileMe, which I use for photo sharing. That, and iDisk but that one is easily transferred to Dropbox or something similar.
