It wouls do Apple good for the higher-ups to keep an eye on this kid.
I would even say that it would be good for Steve Jobs to keep an eye on him, now that he has more time for himself.
Of course, first they would want to see that he is disciplined and can understand how he can do it the right way.
People like this would have to remind Jobs of his young self. The curiosity of just being able to do things that others cannot do.
But most importantly the unique ability to be able to see quickly things that others have done right, but that can be done better. Has that not been what Jobs and Apple have done recently with their breakout (copies) products.
These type of people don't just fall out of trees. Jobs found someone like that with Ive's and perhaps others.
Who knows, 13 years later he might be the next CEO in line.

I'm wondering if it's tactical. Will he be forced to sign an agreement making jailbreaking something they can sue for? Are they gonna lock him in a room and claim he never showed up? Or is he going to do legitimate work for them?

The fact that they are calling him an intern is really weird.

Unless he starts his own operation and make it big, he'll be anywhere from moderately wealthy to just well off, like many of the Apple engineers.

eh, the article makes it sound like he's a bit more of an Apple fanboi who likes doing this for fun. Not every hacker is some Stallman devotee out to rid the world from the evils of closed-source soft/hardware. Seems he LIKES doing the equivalent of QA on code. I've been at a couple of companies with devs like that. Dropped our bugs in half we we put them on QA code review.

^This. If you follow @comex tweets he seems to be more into the code at the OS level than anything else.

Geohot and others... possibly a different story on their motivations.

BTW IMO He's an "intern" as that's probably the best way to see how he fits in and he is, after all, young... And, has he even graduated from college? (not that it's a big deal)
