Apple invites press to 'talk iPhone' at media event on Oct. 4 - Page 5

On eBay? Between 300-350 bucks, which is a lot less than what I got for my unlocked 3Gs last year. Retail, well that's anyone's guess, but I'd say the 16 and 32's will be pulled completely, and used for warranty exchanges or moved to other countries like China. I'd expect an 8 gig version of the 4 to replace the 3Gs at the 99 dollar price point.

My Motorola V710 and E815 both had REALLY good voice controls. Almost no errors, even with an address book with hundreds of entries. No "training", no hoops. Just push one button, say "call addabox mobile" and BAM it calls you. When I finally switched to my first iPhone, it was a huge step back not having this feature.

I am with the side who thinks there's a double meaning in the "talk iPhone." The speech recog/personal assistant is going to be a major new selling point. I just hope it understands my Australian accent.

The phone, like myself, probably won't understand most of what you say.

There is a danger in reading too much into this. Here's a nice list of all the special events with tag lines - http://bit.ly/qhGvME; they don't always have special meaning

Good list but where's all the iPhone events (+one more thing) on that last? Clearly something is missing.

I think the invitation says

*CALENDAR- the date October 4 Tuesday

*CLOCK- the time 10 am

*MAP-the place apple headquarters infinite loop

*PHONE- with "1" on the top Means maybe 1 iPhone to launch?

That's the standard clock icon, used to show in this case the event is at 10am. Nothing more, nothing less, IMO.

And let's not forget Apple's purchase of AI company, Siri. Perhaps Apple has been designing a new microphone system, as the case and display couldn't really get that much better. That would allow more fluent command of your iPhone regardless of noisy or unpredictable audio conditions.

I know I'm really scraping the barell here. It would be nice if all Apple stores did become LTE towers somehow. Too bad there were no remodelings for higher (much higher) ceilings! Lol

Oh dear. Lots of new tech for features I have no interest in.

As a 3G owner I might have to upgrade just to have a phone that can run its own OS.

This could mean that there will be fewer changes than anticipated... just the standard stuff.

Deductive reasoning. The inclusion of Tuesday and 4 point to next Tuesday, October 4th, which concides with it's typical week long lead in before an event. Same goes for the 10:00; that could technically be 10pm or Eastern Time, but there is precedence for 10am Pacific Time.

And in case that seems like a leap, the last Tuesday to fall on the 4th was in January and the next one won't be till a year from now, so.....

So... you're saying the "new" iPhone won't really be available for another year yet ?!?!?!

Damn!!!... I was actually looking forward to replacing my 3GS next month!

I like that! 'Deductive reasoning'. Of course I was splitting hairs there, but you are absolutely right. Thanks for explaining.

BTW, haven't seen another thought on this, but while it's got cues and info "cleverly" embedded in the invite, this is about the lamest event announcement thingie I can recall since Apple became so event driven. First sign of less sweating the details in the Post-Steve times? Or am I just lacking in taste, and it's the coolest ever?

facts:

- There wasn't a new iPhone this year's june. It's been always in june since 2007.
- There wasn't a music event this year's september. It's been always in september the new iPod models.
- This october 4th event calls it Let's talk iPhone! so, what's with the new iPods? That one is too obvious.
- A lot of people do not buy iPhones because of the contract.
- Apple needs to give more options.

It surely didn't say "Let's talk iPhones or iPods.....

It ain't stellar, so yes, this is all "post-Steve". But Apple now has more pressing issues to execute on, it need not be so constantly clever in everything. iOS5, iPhone5, iPad3, redesigned MacBooks, plus prepping the product pipeline. There's a lot to be done that need not be too clever. That's where Tim Cook comes in. Let's just hope he and someone else can step up to the plate of vision and innovation close enough to Steve in the next three years. But for the immediate future, it's about smooth execution and just making enough gosh darned iPhones and iPads for everyone especially China. China, China, China. Scary, but a lot of the fate of humanity's financial future rests on China. Or at least the "markets" think so, for this decade anyway.

Hey guys,
I just wanted to put in my input here. I've been considering what the "1" might mean and I have come to a conclusion that it simply signifies that they had a "missed release" (June; like a missed call). I doubt it signifies much else.

Apple knows that device it's a waste of technology

Okay, I'll bite. In what way?

You can buy it as a Touch if you don't want the phone

So it's not at all going to disappear in any way, shape, or form. Got it.

And LIKE FUN the carriers would let it be a "use whatever plan you want" device. iPhone (proper) sales would stop existing entirely.

My bet is that Apple will launch a touch screen iPhone nano relying solely on the headset for audio and voice to control. Look at the 4 icons in the invitation. Just the same size as the nano touch. A perfect way to launch a low cost phone that didn't sacrifice features to lower the price. Instead it would raise the bar on a popular existing product!

Didn't sacrifice features?! Are you freaking kidding me?! How would a 1" screened phone not sacrifice features?!

The stupidly-large-screeners will call me a hypocrite, but a 1" screen on a phone is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Ever. And this is from a guy who actually uses a phone that has a 1" screen on a semi-daily basis. Well, 1.8". Way too small and it isn't even touch.

My guess is they launch a true iPhone 5, and an iPhone nano as one more thing.

I'm not sure Apple wants a fourth branch of iOS.

Basically it would be a nano+a cellular radio. Never mind that it's physically impossible to fit any cellular chip into that size; let's ignore that right now.

That's all it would be. An iPod nano plus calling. So what would you do with it? You can't hold it to your face, it's 1.48"x1.61". It's too small.

So what, you're forced to use headphones to make calls? Zero sold day one. Zero sold one year later.

Ah, the iPhone shuffle. Randomly call your contacts. I see. Voice tech, even Nuance voice tech, isn't good enough to do pure voice-based control.

So it's not remotely an iPhone, then. It's a completely different product.

Aside: for future reference, use the quote system built into the forum. It makes posts way more readable.

1) Please learn to quote comments. It makes them easier to read.

2) How does a 1" 1:1 display compared to the current 3.5" 3:2 display not take away from the standard iPhone. Do you not realize that the iPod Nano doesn't run iOS nor have the requisite performance capabilities to run iOS. Even if that somehow materialized you would still need to get a decent battery usage out of a phone with a very small battery. Finally, no default iPhone app or App Store app is going run on this device's display. IOW, there is nothing standard about it.

With just a couple of days to go (3 Days 6 Hours 38 Minutes to be exact), where are the elevator pictures???

Go get 'em!

With a 4, I likely won't be upgrading this time around...

Your = the possessive of you, as in, "Your name is Tom, right?" or "What is your name?"

You're = a contraction of YOU + ARE as in, "You are right" --> "You're right."
