i would like to get a usb 3 thumb drive, but i find that most don't support the mac. Can i use any usb thumb drive and reformat it using disk utility? Thanks

I'm unaware if USB 3 flash drives can even be used in OS X, as there aren't drivers for them there.

Sure, USB 3 might be physically backwards compatible with 2, but that doesn't imply it will work at all.
