As to why these companies don't work together to get rid of MS once and for all one has to assume that a collaboration of companies with products with infringe on Microsoft patents don't have any more solid legal ground to stand on than individual companies with products with infringe on Microsoft patents.

I'm pretty sure every electronics company in existence violates at least 1 of Microsoft's patents...not hard to strong arm a smaller company into complying with Microsoft's wishes.

So if this goes on MS will be the first company that earns its money not by selling products or services but by ripping off other companies that violate their patents. A sort of legal patent troll. Maybe that has to happen first before patent laws will change.

If they are violating Microsoft's patents its not strong arming, it's organizing payment for the use of a property that belongs to Microsoft, in the same way that Microsoft pay other companies for the use of patents in Microsoft products.

When you go to the grocery store the check-out chick doesn't have to strong arm the payment out of you as you leave, unless of course you were planning on stealing.

In the same way a majority of Android companies have decided they don't want to be thieves and agreed they need to pay Microsoft for the use of Microsoft patents in their technology.

Of course, you can disagree with the entire software patent system... but it's not Microsoft's fault for working within the system.

Patent infringement is not thievery.

And just because something works within a system doesn't mean it should be supported outright.

I personally don't understand why some gesture can be patented but a video game cannot be.

At least B&N shows no fear of Microsoft, outing their patent claims that had so far been kept secret. Yes, it's the same underhanded tactics they attempted to use against Linux IMO.

Today more of Barnes & Nobles defense tactics were revealed. Kudos to them for not rolling over and squealing like a pig when Microsoft walked up.

B&N might just be successful.
