Apple seeds developers second iOS 5.0.1 beta in two days

Thread Starter
Apple is apparently working quickly to publicly release iOS 5.0.1, as evidenced by the company's second beta in two days released on Friday.

People familiar with the latest build made available to iOS developers said it is known as "9A404." It is available as a download from Apple's developer site, or as an over-the-air update for those already running the first iOS 5.0.1 beta.

The first iOS 5.0.1 beta was issued on Wednesday with a few hiccups, as some developers said they were unable to activate their devices when updating to the pre-release software. Some developers were incorrectly given the message: "This device is not registered as part of the iPhone Developer Program."

Apple is working quickly to issue iOS 5.0.1 publicly after the company acknowledged this week that flaws iOS 5 have cause battery life issues for some users. The company said that "a small number of customers" were experiencing the issue, which would be patched through the forthcoming software update.

The first beta of iOS 5.0.1 was labeled build "9A402." It included a number of improvements listed by Apple:
Fixes bugs affecting battery life
Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
Improves voice recognition for Australian users during dictation
Contains security improvements
iOS 5.0.1 beta introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations."

Less than 50 megs OTA for an i4.....800 megs OTA for a 4S.

Hopefully this update also fixes the push email problem associated with the move from Mobileme to iCloud.

Saw this in Software Update on my 4S and thought my iPhone had become stupid as it already had 5.01, what's stopping them change the version number.

I was thinking that's a server-side issue.

Obviously, the 4S requires more changes than the 4 to fix this battery issue. Siri is not the only thing using data or querying the network.

My 4S was unplugged 26 hr ago, and in between I have used it for phone calls, messaging, shooting HD videos, lots of photos, playing streaming music for 2 hr, youtube videos, web browsing, wifi tethering, video conversion for facebook upload and other stuff. More usage than usual due to an event. Clocks about 7.5 hr of usage plus 2hr of streaming music, 26 hr of standby.

Battery is at 16%.

I would say that's impressive. Waiting to see if the new update improves it even further. I turned off iTunes Wifi sync and diagnostic reporting, however.

FWIW, besides the spotty battery issues, audio during calls is being reported as more of an issue by Mashable.

http://mashable.com/2011/11/07/iphone-4s-audio-bug/

"...Meanwhile, a growing number of 4S users have found a significant audio bug: On some calls, they cannot hear the person on the other end.

Even for those afflicted, the bug does not appear to affect all calls. It can sometimes be remedied by plugging in a headset, they say, or pressing the mute button twice, or disabling Siri. But the elusive nature of a bug does not make it any less annoying and the number of users affected by it appears to be on the rise.

This discussion thread ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread...art=0&tstart=0 ) on Apples website now features 34 pages of notes from affected users, with new commenters chiming in daily. The issue appears to cut across service providers; AT&T and Verizon customers in the U.S. are affected, as are users in the UK and Australia. There is also a Facebook Group called iPhone 4S Outgoing Call No Audio a sure sign that the problem is crossing the threshold from bug to meme.
