Hugging it first is always a good thing

First thing you should do is get the iBook set up for Internet access and then use the Software Update control panel/system preference. If you're going to be using both 9 and X then run it in both OS. That'll give you all the new software that has come out since your iBook was packed up. After that just play around with it, see what kind of programs you start wishing you had and what kind of toys for your iBook you want.

As for durability the iBook features an internal magnesium frame surrounded by a polycarbonate (same stuff they use to make bullet proof plastic) shell. The hard drive on the iBook is also rubber mounted for impact resistance. Given all that the iBook is a very durable notebook. However a case would still be welcomed for added protection (it is a $1200-1800 investment after all). If you're going to be carrying around a briefcase or backpack a lot then look into getting a sleeve. If not then go for a full notebook case. Plenty of choices are available, especially if you got a 12" iBook.

You really need a case. It's good both for carrying ANYWHERE, and storage (when not in use).

I bought the "SC-10: iBook 'Away Two Slipcase" from Willow Designs. It fits my AC adaptor, zip drive, USB cable, Graphire Tablet, Mouse and some Disks and pencils as well as the 'book comfortably while maintaining the small exterior dimensions that a 12" 'book affords.

They can be pricey, but don't cheap out on a case... it's protecting your investment. If you get a substandard case with anything less than a lifetime warranty, you're asking for a strap to break and your 'book to come crashing down on the pavement... probably ****ing it up royal.

Yes, I have an iBook and iPod. What kind of scratch remover, Installer? Seriously! It's looking like I throw it around!

Not having an iBook, I can't help you directly, but it does seem to be a common complaint.

R U still in time to cancel the order? rumors suggest April 30, new laptops, maybe iBooks too. wouldn't it suck to get your new machine on the exact date that they're updated? always base purchasing decisions on rumors. hehehe...

Just in case they ship your iBook early and stick you with an "old" one... I'd consider canceling that order too. Sure it's a rumor, but it's less than a week away!

You'd be kicking yourself big time if they give it a decent bump less than a week after you get yours...

As for a case, you can get pretty inexpensive sleeves for the iBook, I'd do that at a minimum. You can always then just toss this sleeve into your regular bag if you wish - won't look like an expensive laptop is in there.

The iBook is rugged, but scratch-prone as hell. Get that baby covered!
