Invisible subtitles on MP4 video file

Thread Starter
I recently watched an mp4 video file with subtitles on my Mac, however, whether I play it on QuickTime or VLC the subtitles arent displayed. Its the first time I have to deal with such a file.
Is this an issue with the mp4 file format?
Is there some setting to be adjusted in QuickTime or VLC?

Are the subtitles standard SRT files?

I dont know, I only have the mp4 file, and while the VLC video menu shows the presence of an enabled subtitled track, it doesnt display it.

If theres an SRT file within the mp4 file I cannot tell.

Thank you.

If you don't mind it, grab Subler. It's a spectacular little utility that lets you modify MP4 files without reencoding them or wasting your time converting them to MOV with freaking QuickTime. ()

You can create your own chapters, images for said chapters, add or remove audio tracks, and add/remove subtitles in a flash.

And if your MP4 has a subtitle track in it, it will show up in the list of content tracks when opened with Subler:

If not, well, they're invisible for a reason.

So what's your reason for the eye-rolling?
