Dontcha know: there's millions of potential buyers for the iPad "X", but not until it has "retina display".

Just asking: but you or anyone else happen to know what ever happened to the resolution independence core framework? Something that was even in Leopard, but still not used to this day with OSX.

Also: what about a new "pixel-doubling" algorithm being a possibility? (Edit: something that would be incredibly cool with the AppleTV... or "The New" Apple TV... the "1 last thing" maybe? Think: everything in Full-HD... even standard TV and DVD)

Would sure make a hell of a lot more sense than trying to push ~500,000 (1/2-BILLION!) pixels with an ARM device. "I don't think we're there yet Toto"

500,000 is 1/2 million, not billion. ipad3 needs much higher resolution or it is dead on arrival

Yep, a slight bezel on the back like the iPad 2 to make it easier to scoop up off the table is one thing but at the core it will need to rest still. That's something Apple isn't likely to mess with.

Also any rumor that has no idea why something is going to be the way it is, especially if it is changing, is one for a barrel of salt.

And given that the iPad 3 hasn't had March go past without even an announcement it is hard to say that the release has been delayed due to anything including Job's death. Perhaps it is right on schedule with when Apple wants to release it. Which might not be when the other two were just like the iPhone 4s wasn't. Doesn't equal a deny but merely a change in Apple's game plan. Same as when they pulled out of MacWorld.

but to the masses, nope. Most of them would rather have a screen that has a better coating to prevent smudges, stronger glass that doesn't shatter if the kids drop it off the couch onto the hard wood floor and better brightness for outdoor use. Some crazy 500DPI screen means nothing to them especially when there's no major source of 1080p video for the iPad via iTunes, Netflix etc

I'll bet it's the A6 "sandwiched" 4-core CPU/GPU processor. Jettison that thing! Thinness is the top priority.

Or I'll bet it's the longer-life but thicker batteries used. Change to thinner, but lower-life batteries! THINNER!

Or maybe it's the backlighting system rumored for the iPad "3's" new display that's the culprit in it's deplorable thickness. PLEASE! stick with the current display technology in the interest of thinness.

If this thing's any thicker than two Time Magazines, you can count me out!

I want it as thin as a newsletter (or less).

If I lay on the couch and rest my current iPad 2 on my chest, it is SO heavy that it makes breathing difficult. This COULD result in asphyxiation in an untold number of users, and a class action suit could certainly result!

I'll take a redesign of the iPad 2 with the only changes being thinner and lighter. That's the only thing that's important.

If Apple has to shorten battery life or replace the 1024x768 display with one at the same resolution but thinner and lighter, or go back to the thinner A4, they should. THINNER (and lighter)?, THEN I'll buy one. But thicker is a deal-breaker. Thinness is the highest priority of all. Paramount.

If a mugger has designs on your thinner iPad, just hold it completely horizontally (running a "bubble level" app if necessary), and he'd halt his advance abruptly and be like, "Huh? WTF?! Where did it go?!! It....DISAPPEARED!" He'd walk away befuddled, and you'd be safe (and not dispossessed of your iPad).

This could avert countless crimes.

But make the iPad "3" thicker, and I'll organize an "Occupy Apple" sit-in protest that will instantly descend on Cupertino like hellfire.

I won't have it! I mean, HONESTLY!
