Program to create Windows Media Files?

I need to create an audio file and the receiver needs it in Windows Media format. What is a good Mac program, hopefully free, that will do that? I also have an iPad and iPhone so if necessary an app for either device that will do this will work also.

The discontinued WMV Player put out by Microsoft.

Nothing. Convert your audio to a real format to be able to play it on iDevices.

Free options tend to output older Windows Media formats. The standard one for decoding has an encoder but it's very expensive for HD output:

You might be cheaper installing a VM like VMWare, Parallels or VirtualBox with XP and exporting via the VM. It's also more likely to be compatible with Windows that way.

Your recipient may believe that he/she needs Windows Media format. I doubt that the belief is correct. Virtually every Windows user who is into music plays MP3 if they don't have iTunes, which also plays MP3. I would suggest that you ask your recipient which application(s) will be used to handle the files. I believe that you will find that the application handles MP3 just fine.

If not, then you will need Flip4Mac WMV Studio, the $49 license for Flip4Mac.

The person that needs this file is definitely not computer savvy and I sent it in another format earlier. I can't remember which format it was but she can't play it so she stated she knows she can play Windows Media format so to send that. Now that I'm thinking about it though she must have Windows Media Player since she has windows. I know as I read that Windows Media Player will play wav, mp3, aif and others. Are there any other audio recording programs for the Mac that I should look at that will play these other formats that Windows Media Player will play?

My guess that your friend's problem has nothing to do with file-compatibility. i would bet dollars to donuts that her problem is that only .wma and .wav are associated with Windows Media Player on her system. Because she is a novice, she does know how to change file associations or how to open files except by double-clicking. Volunteer to associate additional audio filetypes with Windows Media Player for her.

To answer your question, there is a audio flle conversion utility named SoundConverter that handles virtually every digital audio format in the Solar System. However, it is not freeware. If the file format were your friend's problem, then I would recommend SoundConverter. However, it is not. The solution is to her real problem is to change file associations to allow Windows Media Player to open .mp3 files. The solution to her real problem is free.
