My guess that your friend's problem has nothing to do with file-compatibility. i would bet dollars to donuts that her problem is that only .wma and .wav are associated with
Windows Media Player on her system. Because she is a novice, she does know how to change file associations or how to open files except by double-clicking. Volunteer to associate additional audio filetypes with
Windows Media Player for her.
To answer your question, there is a audio flle conversion utility named
SoundConverter that handles virtually every digital audio format in the Solar System. However, it is not freeware. If the file format were your friend's problem, then I would recommend
SoundConverter. However, it is not. The solution is to her real problem is to change file associations to allow
Windows Media Player to open .mp3 files. The solution to her real problem is free.
