I feel the same way if we are just talking aesthetics. The original design shape is much more attractive (and more practical in a few ways as well).
Sadly there is a lot more to the design of the iPad than what looks good. Weight, mass produceability, thinness, and other concerns all make the new design superior.
One of the reasons the (new) curved edge design wins is that if you made the original design as thin as the 2.0 model it would be totally flat on the table top (losing that gentle curve on the back), and would thus be almost impossible to pick up. The iPhone escapes this fate by virtue of it's small size.
