Apple sells out of launch-day iPads, new orders ship by March 19

Thread Starter
Less than two days after Apple's new iPad was unveiled, the company has sold out of launch-day preorders in its online store, as new orders are now advertised to ship by March 19.

Those who order a third-generation iPad now from Apple's online store will not receive it until after next Friday's launch date. The March 19 shipping date now applies to all models, capacities and colors sold in the U.S.

Of course, while launch-day supplies are no longer available at Apple's online store, those who wait in line at the company's retail outlets will still have a chance to get an iPad on March 16. In addition, Apple's retail partners, including Best Buy and others, will have stock on launch day.

The first sign that demand for the new iPad was outstripping supply came on Thursday, when shipping estimates for the white 4G LTE model compatible with AT&T's network were the first to have estimated shipping dates of March 19. The first models to sell out for launch day delivery were the 16- and 64-gigabyte capacities.

But now, all 16-, 32- and 64-gigabyte models, Wi-Fi-only or 4G LTE, and in black and white are all scheduled to ship three days after the official iPad launch.

Next Friday's iPad launch will be the largest debut yet for the company, as the touchscreen tablet will go on sale in 10 countries. They are the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia.

As for the 16-gigabyte iPad 2, available in both white and black with Wi-Fi-only connectivity or 3G compatibility, new orders are advertised to ship in one to three business days. The Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 will remain available in a 16-gigabyte capacity as the new low-end model, for $399, while a 3G variant will cost $529.

Those who were among the first to preorder the third-generation iPad have already begun receiving notifications that their order has shipped from China. However, the iPads are not scheduled to actually be delivered until next Friday, which is the product's official launch day.

Mine still says preparing to ship, but I'm not worried, because some Chinese dude will be loading my new iPad onto a Fed Ex or DHL or UPS plane later on today and then Apple will send me the tracking number. My iPad will make a brief stopover in Alaska probably, and then it will make it's way towards the East Coast.

Next Friday, I will be monitoring the tracking number every few minutes, because there's no chance in hell that I will let my new iPad be left unattended if some douchebag delivery guy just decides to drop it off without even bothering to ring the damn bell. A new iPad is worth more than the actual cash value of it.

And with all of these countries participating in the preorder, the preorder numbers are going to be off the chart if and when Apple releases them. Apple is not like Android manufacturers. Apple is not ashamed to say how many they sold, and Apple does not need to lie or hide any numbers.

And they said this was an insignificant iPad revision.

Well, "they" are clearly retarded, so who cares about what they say.

The screen is going to be so damn killer. An insignificant revision? Hahahaha

This is a technological leap never before seen in the entire history of tech. How's that for a fucking insignificant upgrade?

The display will be like looking at a full color print magazine. I look forward to getting mine, as I'm sure everybody else who has one on the way also is looking forward to theirs.

But it only sells well because of reality distortion fields and because the purchasers are a bunch of iSheeple! It's clearly inferior to the Galaxy Tab with its superior.... um....umm...its superior...sd slot?

They said the same thing about the iPhone 4S. Seems to me that all the braying from the nay-sayers is a good sign.

No, you have it wrong. Samsung says that the Note is a better comparison to the iPad than the Tab. And since the Note allows you to have 2 apps side-by-side and has a stylus, it's a better content creation device than the iPad.

And people accuse Apple of having a reality distortion field? Really?

The border is still as big when Moore's law says it should drop by half every 18 microfortnights. It's thicker. It's heavier. The display resolution is overkill. Last year they sold out much faster in just one country so this year in 10 countries is proof they arn't selling well. People are waking up and realizing Apple is crapple with their closed socialist OS. Hitler!

any news on what time they're available in stores on the 16th yet?
We don't know how many they had on hand for launch, so it doesn't really mean much that they have sold the first batch.

Not just a styus but a pressure senstive styus as the ipad can only detect one pressure

Clearly this is an attempt by Apple to create an illusion that supply is scare so that customers will order in droves(out of fear that they won't get one for months).

I can't make this stuff up, people.

I am not aware of the iPad detecting any pressure.

Since day 1 the argument that the iPad is no good for content creation has been ridiculous. It goes without saying that no matter how much power, how great a screen, how many a Card Slots and USB ports, and stylus compatibility, anyone attempting to use a tablet for web development, Avid editing, Photoshop work, Desktop Publishing etc is out to lunch. For that you need a truck.

There's other types of content creation at which the iPad is better than adequate.

I'm so confident, that I just bought AAPL @545. I'm hoping for a little rally towards the end of the day. 1 hour left to go.

Means nothing. All part of the game. Keep em hungry.

This happens every time there is a product launch and it's quite tiresome.

Next will come a flurry of faulty iPads with yellow screens, cracked bezels or that don't' work at all.

The only people that are scared are the suppliers' workers, who'll have to work extra hours to get as many of these babies out the door.

Let's hope Apple's learned their lesson from last year after they rushed the iPad 2's manufacturing so much, they botched up the displays, which ended up bleeding light from the edges.

As someone who reads a LOT on my iPad, the resolution improvement is far from overkill.

I would have bought the new one even if that was the ONLY change from the "2".

That resolution improvement may not matter much for video, or even pictures... but for those of us with the ability (and desire) to read text, it's HUGE.

That said, it was a frustrating wait for the shipping dates to start to slip! ... I won't be around on the 16th (that's prime-time for spring skiing!), so I couldn't pre-order until the delivery date started moving back!

NASDAQ should just calculate Apple stock price in number of iPads.

AAPL
Price per share: 1.09 iPads
Market Cap: 1.01B iPads

Yep, for each AAPL that I buy, I think that I could have bought an iPad instead. An iPad is great of course, but 1 AAPL is even better, as it only increases in value.

For those of us who want to be able to create and save files, the additional resolution does nothing to improve our user experience. Every two bit crapware app on the device has its own sandbox. Why doesn't the owner of the device also get a small sandbox that they can use to save files to? Every stupid app can have access to the camera roll except Safari.

Not being able to upload a photo to a website is a major pain in the ass. Every content management platform now has to have their own iOS app just because you cannot upload photos through the browser. That is why we have a Craigslist app, a Wordpress app, a Facebook app, a match.com app etc, etc. Why? Simply because you cannot get at your photos from within the browser. This crap is annoying. Do people really think this is a better system than a real computer?

The iPad is a fad. It will never replace net books.

Apple missed the boat big time.

The iPad doesn't detect pressure... it creates pressure... on the other guys to create something worthwhile.

IMO the stock is too high atm. I have only 1 MAY call and several puts (I am shorting it). I expect a market correction.

And Apple almost always go down on monthly expiration week. I am hoping for a re-entry point at a lower price before the april earnings rally.

I got my order in around 9:30 this morning (mountain time) and got shipping for March 16 on a black 32 GB wifi only.

I was quite happy when my boss poked his head in and told me to go ahead and order it. So nice when work buys me toys.

Yes, it's near the ATH. I wasn't looking to go long though.

I was just looking to make a quick trade, buy high, and then sell a little higher. I recently got my account upgraded without any limits on it, so I'm just having a bit of fun and getting used to not having any trading limits.

Good luck with that... This is a different kind of run... The smart money knows a dividend is coming, and it seems the market is finally realizing how cheap aapl really is... Notice even the minor pullbacks have created swift and powerful buying, bringing aapl right back up... I just do not see much downside here, maybe 530s, but not much lower... like I said... good luck..!!!

If I get 530 I will covered some puts and start some buying but I am hoping for 500 if there is a market correction. Beware of fast moves up, it may trigger a sharp correction and once its started the stop lost makes it go down very fast. This is why I always have a few puts with my calls.

I'm really interested to see the sales performance of the new iPad compared to the iPad 2 during the same time. Should be interesting. They probably have alot more supply too, just like the 4S. Looking forward to some sales figures. Not gonna pre-order, hoping I can just walk into an Apple store and grab one sometime in the next couple weeks.
