WWDC 2012 Banners depict iOS 6, OS X, iCloud as stars of the show - Page 2

I wonder if this means we can expect an imminent iOS 6 release, say within 1 week of the announcement?  With such prevalent advertising of it, I'd say yes.  Good news if so!  I bet it will be amazing considering Mountain Lion releasing soon and the convergence of OS X and iOS being underway already.  I could definitely use more integration between the two. 

 

No. Not for months. Just like every other year.

 

The minimal answer to this is rather easy because Apple has made a promise quite a while ago that it has so far honoured in regards what free software updates you can expect for a device purchased from them.  the rule is that an iOS device will ship with a free OS and will get all the updates to that OS for free.  It will also get a free upgrade to the next (large number) version of the OS and all the free updates to that version as well.  Beyond that there are no promises.  

 

So any device that shipped with iOS 4.0 on it, will not *necessarily* get or be able to use iOS 6.0.  

 

That being said, Apple has also gone above and beyond several times before and I would expect that if any devices are left out it's the (rather underpowered) 3.0 devices.  

iOS 6 will work with:

 

iPad 2, the new iPad

iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, the new iPhone

4th iPod touch

 

Not the original iPad or third iPod touch. Simple.

iOS version numbers seem to be advancing more quickly than OS X version numbers. Maybe that's just because the touch platform is younger, so it's easier to come up with new ideas. Or maybe at the exact moment the version numbers converge (i.e. iOS 9, OS X 10.9) they will make them a single distro that chooses UIKit or AppKit depending on what device it's deployed on.

 

But then again, since Apple only deploys it's OS on devices it manufactures, making them one product is kind of pointless. I mean, code convergence can happen without product convergence in this case.

This may be a silly question, but with a slot of rumours stating Siri may be coming to the iPad (I'm guessing if this is true it will just be the new iPad) is there a chance this will come out before the main release of iOS 6 in September/October? Like in iOS 5.2?

This way it's another feature Apple could talk about when promoting the new iPad, which could boost sales.

 

Come out? No. Be talked about if it's going to a device other than the iPhone? Yes.

 

I don't see them adding Siri early. Particularly since the first-gen iPad isn't going to be able to run iOS 6.

1) It is a less mature system but it's also a much simpler and closed system. The latter two make a huge difference over a modern desktop OS. On the other side of that Apple is release OSes much faster than MS because Windows is considerably more complex and open than OS X.

2) I don't see Mac OS X and iOS ever converging. I see no point at which I can buy OS X and then install that onto an iPod Touch or vice versa. They are too distinct. There are core layers that are similar, if not exact, and that will continue to converge but the bulk of the code will be the UI and how you interact with the UI which I see no point in converging into a single OS.


PS: I can see a path for OS X becoming free updates like iOS. The benefits are that Apple can use it to 1) make it a value added to simplify the Mac purchase and 2) get more users on the most current version of OS X which makes troubleshooting simpler and therefore less expensive.


Why don't you think it will work with the 2010 iPad with the A4 chip? Apple's history has been pretty consistent here. Personally, I think it's likely to require a machine with 512MB RAM so it doesn't fall into the issue that a 2 year old iPhone had with iOS and 128MB RAM.

edit: Looks like you're right. Links to the upcoming iOS 6 betas do not appear to include builds for the 2010 iPad.

That's what I thought it would be, although after looking online it looks like the iPhone 3GS may be supported....

Meanwhile, rumors of all new Mac lineup persists. But how often does Apple make major hardware announcements or launches at WWDC? Not never. But rarely?
 

 

MacOS has quite a bit longer history, too. I doubt we will see iOS 25 in 2031.

Which is complete and utter crap. Know why? It's a slap in the face to anyone that bought an iPad BARELY over a year ago. It's a slap in the face to anyone that bought an iPad on launch day.

 

The 3GS has WORSE specs and we're expected to believe it can run iOS 6 and the iPad cannot?

I don't give a crap that it's "still being sold". It had its three years of updates, just like the iPhone 3G and the first iPhone before it.

 

I may hate (but can understand) the "no iPad because of 256MB RAM" excuse, but there is NO explanation they can give me if they make iOS 6 work (even PARTIALLY, because there's no way it gets anywhere NEAR everything) on the iPhone 3GS.

 

I do not like this new Apple that is trimming into their old "three year support" guideline.

It doesn't make any sense if the iPhone gets three, the iPad two, and iPod Touch One.   This has to be a joke because that just sounds like 3...2....1... and Apple doesn't do rockets. If anything the third iPod Touch should be for iOS 6, now sure it doesn't have a camera, but there was stuff in iOS 5 that invovled a camera but it was still supported.

Because this isn't my first rodeo. I've been around long enough to know that the little things like that are exactly what Apple does. Now, we're starting to see broken links to first-gen iPad iOS 6, so at this point it's a wait and see.

I think your your reasoning as to why Apple will/won't do something in the future is usually sound and if they don't include iOS 6 for the 2010 iPad but for the 2009 iPhone I will say "WTF!" but I don't think it helps your credibility to be upset over a rumour or to state an opinion, regard how likely it may be, as fact. I think it takes away from one's objectivity.

 

Oh, I'm known for knee-jerk reactions that involve products I just happen to own. 

 

I get it out of my system and then I move on. Generally I'm up and running with understanding their explanation for cutting this or that within a day or so after reading their reasoning.
