City-wide Wireless Networking

Hmm.
Would it be possible to set up a tower system like cellular towers (perhaps ON cellular towers) that would provide wireless Internet access to anyone who bought the appropriate "modem?" (I forget what the term is in this case) I suppose it would take some battery power for the user to transmit back to the tower.

Is wide-area wireless Internet access feasable? Can I get on a bus in NYC and work all day without losing my Internet connection as it goes about the city?

There was a great article on the front page of today's (12/7) Wall Street Journal. It was about a Mr. Selby that has set up a free Airport network that covers the town of Aspen, CO. He built it by piggybacking off of existing broadband connections (T1, Cable, DSL, etc) and with surplus Russian Army parts. There are a few of these wireless guerrillas across the county.

That seems like a really cool idea. I'm sure in the future there will be ISPs that offer this sort of service. I tell ya...I can't wait.

Although this isn't what you have in mind, there are currently ISPs that offer wireless internet to your home. Unfortunately it's not very portable because of this satellite dish that is mounted on the roof...

Seems that this is a good step toward a city-wide network though.
