Interestingly, I came across the following ad for a Surface manufacturing manager:

Ah, Microsoft, Game Over. How sad. To think that Bill Gates has to lord over such failures since 2006 or so, and foreseeably for the next 10 or 20 years until Microsoft's final demise, is just, bl**dy tragic.

But I guess that's what happens when you put your d-bag college buddy in charge of one of the world's most significant companies, and not give a damn about what he does.

I'll say it until I am blue in the face, just go back and watch the All Things D full Steve Jobs vs Bill Gates 2007 interview.

Watch closely. Bill Gates has absolutely no idea what he is talking about and his answers to the questions make absolutely no sense (then, and definitely now).

People laugh at Apple fans and say we worship Steve Jobs. Well, the whole world has been worshiping Bill Gates for far too long, and the Emperor lost his Clothes a long, long time ago.

I had forgotten all about the Courier.  Thumbs up for the reminder.  It was actually fairly innovative.  

 

If (unlike the Surface demo) the Courier had actually worked it could have been a bit of a game changer.  Since it ended up being more vaporware from MS we'll never know what it could have done, what programs it might have run, etc., but it would have been interesting to see.  Obviously Apple was well into launching the iPad at the same time but I wonder if Amazon or B&N would have gotten into the tablet business as well?

 

Gizmodo's wait and see attitude about why it might not work out was pretty on-target...

 

"The Courier user experience presented here is almost the exact opposite of what everyone expects the Apple tablet to be, a kung fu eagle claw to Apple's tiger style..."

 

I like the first line in about the Courier in this engadget article from Sept. 2009...

 

"We know, we know -- you're probably still waiting for the Apple Tablet that'll never come..."
