Desktop Shortcut Question

On my iMac (which I think shipped with Leopard originally, now on Mountain Lion), I have a desktop shortcut that goes to "/". The icon is a picture of a hard drive. I assume it is a shortcut although it doesn't have a arrow symbol.

 

Is it possible to add this shortcut to my MacBook (also on Mountain Lion)? I can't figure out how.

It's not really a shortcut (alias)… Not sure what to call it.
