So I got this in my email over the weekend...

Promise Vratk x30 series. http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA261LL/A/promise-vtrak-x30-series-72tb-24-by-3tb-sas-4u-raid-subsystem

My questions are:

Who is this for? Video applications that will attach to workstations? They mention servers:

Outstanding performance for video and server applications.

...

The VTrak x30 Series RAID subsystem is qualified with Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, Final Cut Studio, and Xsan.

What servers would this attach to? Mac Pros?

And why doesn't this have Thunderbolt ports?

Wondering if Apple has something up their sleeves with regards to server hardware.

Don't get me all happy like that.

I'm sure whatever they consider a "server" product will be updated in 2013 alongside the regular Mac Pro, but don't expect anything rackable anymore, I don't imagine.

Mac Pro's or Mac Xserve (Hasn't been THAT long since they quit selling 'em.) They are both considered "Servers" when running OSX Server.

It's designed to connect via Fibre Channel ... a card is available for both the Pro and Xserve to support Fibre Channel.  I'm pretty sure that has much better throughput than Thunderbolt anyway, so why downgrade the RAID array by making it Thunderbolt compatible???

I'm guessing anyone that spends over 30k on a storage device isn't going to balk at a $1000 Fibre Channel card since they probably have a 10k Mac Pro to go along with it! :)
