Rumor: Belkin, Kensington, Trust prepare for 'iPad mini' with plethora of cases

A new list of products claims to show dozens of cases for Apple's "iPad mini" from major third-party accessory makers Belkin, Kensington and Trust.

The list was published on Wednesday by ilikeApple.pt. The spreadsheet of product names and identifiers does not have a source, though similar leaks in the past have come from retailers such as Best buy.

Mini cases

AppleInsider cannot comment on the validity of the list, but case makers often make new products based on leaked and rumored schematics ahead of Apple product unveilings. For example, a number of cases based on the design of the iPhone 5 were on store shelves almost immediately after Apple's handset was announced, many of them advertising that they were simply designed for the "new iPhone," as they were completed before the official name was announced.

Among the products listed are the usual cases and screen protectors that accessory makers offer. Various cases for Apple's rumored 7.85-inch iPad have also been captured in images from China.

Interestingly, one of the purported Belkin products carries the name "RETINA HD." However, the title is likely to apply to the name of the product rather than the display on the "iPad mini" itself. Apple's smaller iPad is not expected to have a screen with as high of a pixel density as the new iPad with Retina display.

But it was "delayed", so that'll be a while.

It'd be funny if these cases, too, had to be retooled because they were based on "mock-ups" that you can apparently buy from China, based on rumors and so-called "leaks".

Belkin and Kensington are major so it's unlikely they're going to build a bunch of SKUs based on rumor. Of course the spreadsheet might just be BS but if it's real then that's pretty solid confirmation that the mini is a comin'.

Wow even Belkin & Kensington confirmed the iPad Mini rumor. I guess we will see the real thing in very near future.

So what happened to it, then? They've "confirmed" other non-products in the past.

Link please to actual Kensington and Belkin product releases for non-existant Apple products.

Link, please, to actual Kensington and Belkin product releases for THIS PRODUCT. This remains a rumor.

There were actual product releases (on the shelf) for the "iPhone 5"—the edge-tapered, larger-screened iPhone that never happened—when the 4S came out.

Not from Belkin or Kensington as you implied.

So again.  If this spreadsheet is legitimate and Kensington and Belkin have cases for an iPad Mini then that would indeed be confirmation.  Since it's just a spreadsheet it's not conclusive.

Ah, apologies. I can see how the "they've" was ambiguous.

No, not in the slightest. Cases were made and shipped for an "iPhone 5" at the time of the 4S' launch that never existed.

Thank God these are protective cases and not court cases! Although Samsung is likely preparing one of those for the iPad Mini release.

What could they possibly do? On what grounds?

Haven't they brought new suits against any new device with cellular capabilities Apple has released?

Oh, that. Yeah, they'll do that, all right.

True, to any extent.

Apple has not previously revealed dimensions to case makers ahead of product launch. And I don't recall Belkin and Kensington pre-manufacturing cases based on speculated specs. But color me skeptical.

Kiddin', right? They do this all the time.
