Looks like Microsoft and Amazon have competition for second place.

Interesting - Now Google has a real brand in Nexus, with 3 products spanning different sizes and utility. Particularly interesting that they use LG to make Nexus 4, Asus to make Nexus 7 and Samsung to make Samsung 10. Have they heard of a company called Motorola?

This is the biggest/highest resolution OLED in a consumer device yet.

Though I bet it is Pentile, which will reduce effective ppi quite a bit.

Still I expected a bigger reaction to a 2560x1600 10" OLED.

High resolution screen with apps that are made to run on a small screen cell phone. Oh, OK.

To be fair, he did put it in quotes. But that completely invalidates his entire argument in the first place, so he was probably still intending it to mean "5th" without quotes. In which case, yeah, I'll tear into him. lol.gif

so - the great tablet shootout of Xmas 2012 has started.

Google/Samsung have put their best foot forward, copied a few more of Apple's innovations (e.g. Minicast), and added some good ones of their own (e.g. multiple users - why not, Apple?).

MS of course has launched the Surface RT with huge hype - but who actually needs it except for MS loyalists (all those IT guys)?

And Amazon is still focused on the bottom of the market with the Fire HD - probably will cut the price even more.

Apple of course did a major surprise spec bump to the iPad plus launched its expected new mini - definitely not merely sitting on its market advantage.

what this all adds up to is a lot of confusion in the marketplace, especially for those thinking about buying their first tablet for themselves or a gift. in such situations, most usually opt for the tried and true - in this case the iPad of course - because they can be sure it's at least not a mistake. they know no one will be disappointed opening a Xmas gift package with a mini inside.

this is the quarter that will determine the outcome of the war.

Most CEO's get there by using social skills, not by technical prowess. They took a decade to remove John Sculley, and nearly killed Apple in the process...

You only need to look at some of the decisions made at Nokia, RIMM and MIcrosoft over the past decade, to realise the sum is not firing on all cylinders.

Hmm...I wonder if we'll get a front page ad from Amazon on how the Fire is superior to the Nexus 10? And I wonder if Steven Sinofsky will brand it a "recreational device". lol.gif

If its built but Samsung no way would I buy it. Can't stand their cheap brushed aluminum looking plastic.

I am not saying I am interested, but one of the other forums is full of Apple Hating, spec sheet worshipers. I expected them to latch onto this as the next iPad killer, but I guess that is like the boy who cried wolf long after the Village was past the point of ignoring him. Maybe, maybe not.

Apple certainly has the major press advantage and sooner timing for their release, but that doesn't mean things others won't make a showing. There are a lot of diehards that will never buy Apple and a fair bit of folks with scant needs that don't want to spend a ton of money. So . . .

What was the old joke. The Brits changed the name of the movie to the Madness of King George cause if they left it as The Madness of George 3, Americans would want to know what happened to parts 1 and 2

I suspect that in the near future they will start to call the Nexus Phone and Nexus Tablet to avoid confusion

Cook's response was that Apple didn't make a 7-inch iPad, but rather an iPad with a display that was closer to 8 inches -- nine-tenths of an inch bigger than a 7-inche

You're mistakenly comparing the width of the 10" display Nexus 10 to the iPad Mini rather than the full-size iPad.

Andy Rubin put it this way: "Tactically, we want to make sure the devices are available for every network on the planet." For now, that means that the Nexus 4 will only be available as an unlocked HSPA+ device.

Excuses. Doesn't this mean it won't work on Verizon? And doesn't he also imply it'll never have LTE?

No kidding. The 4S was trashed and mocked for not having LTE, and panned for being 'years behind', a 'joke', etc. Yet more than a year later, Google's flagship Android phone doesnt have it, even when the newest iPhones/iPads do, and everyone is falling over themselves to justify it.
