Apple's 27" iMacs continue to face production issues

Thread Starter
Apple is still facing manufacturing issues with its new big-screen 27-inch iMac, though a report claims the issue could start to improve in February.

Citing industry sources, hit-or-miss DigiTimes reported on Thursday that mass production issues can be pinned on iMac panel supplier LG Display. The problem apparently stems from full lamination issues in producing the panels.

Apple and LG are only able to produce about 100,000 units a month, according to the report. The issues do not apparently apply to the 21.5-inch iMac, which has reached monthly shipments of between 300,000 and 400,000.

AppleInsider previously noted on Monday that Apple's iMacs remain in short supply more than a month after the new all-in-one desktop launched. In fact, Apple's reseller channel remains completely out of stock of the 21.5-inch model.

iMac

Apple's online store advertises that the 27-inch iMac will ship to new orders in three to four weeks. The wait isn't quite as long with the 21.5-inch model, which ships in 7 to 10 business days.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said publicly in October that there would be "significant shortage" of iMacs in the December quarter. And analyst Ming-chi Kuo of KGI Securities was first to reveal in August that the new screen lamination process used in building the new iMacs is particularly difficult with the larger 27-inch model.

Keep in mind that Apple's total sales for Macbook Pro, MacBook Air, Mini, Mac Pro, and iMac are around 16 M per year.

However, those figures are very dependent on quarter. First (calendar) quarter sales will likely be around 3 to 3.5 M units. At the above production rates, Apple can ship between 1.2 M and 1.5 M iMacs this quarter. Given that Apple's laptop sales have been much stronger than desktop sales for years, I don't think that these numbers are all that much of a constraint.

I wonder what Apple plans to do with its Cinema Displays. They are still thicker than the iMac, are they not? You'd think that if they could ditch the computer, the Cinema Displays could simply be as thin as the iMac aspires to be--that is, without the bulge.

Is it really an 'issue' or rather just that the whole process has to be done slower for quality reasons. And then the hand calibration that Tim mentioned would be a little slower also

They have not updated their Thunderbolt or Cinema displays yet, I doubt they will until they catch up with the iMacs. With the pivot, I expect there to be some bulge. I don't think they will depart too far from the iMac style.

Apples appears to be shipping the higher margin one first which would make sense if they are limited on what they can ship

And it still needs depth for the ports on the back.

Really wanted one of these but a configuration that would be powerful enough to replace my desktop was priced at $2,499, and that's not including upgraded memory, which I would do myself since Apple charges a $100 premium for god knows why.

The 21 inch iMacs are tough to find in Northern NJ. I checked all the apple stores, best buy and a local reseller, iStore. All sold out.
They tell me they are "trickling in." One of the apple stores had a 27 inch imac.

In hindsight investors may look back at the last 18 months and see that Apple inflicted several self-inflicted wounds by making their products so difficult to copy that they made them too hard to manufacture, costing Apple marketshare a potentially costing it momentum in some critical markets at critical times.

Windows 8 is scary enough to a lot of people that Apple could be making hay, but can't because it can't ship enough product.  If the iMac were easier to make, Apple could lower the price somewhat and really steal market share from those disaffected Windows users.  The iPhone5... well we'll see in 2 weeks just how production went, but I think it's clear that Apple left SOME sales on the table in the first 3 months because the phone was harder to make.

Just tried to drop the hammer on a 27" iMac. Thank you and screw you bank for not letting me make a $2800 purchase. I guess I'll call my bank in the morning to inform them of this purchase.

I'll say.  Ordered mine on 01/02 and it still has the same status as then:  "Processing Item".  Come on apple!  Get a move on!

Just ordered. 27" 3.2GHz Core-i5 with GTX 675MX with 1GB RAM, 2x4GB RAM (buying 32GB from Newegg for $300), 3TB Fusion Drive, and Trackpad. Basically it's the higher-end default build but with the 3TB Fusion Drive.

I thought about going for the Core-i7 and 2GB GPU but I'm coming from a 2010 13" MBP with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 256MB Nvidia 320M iGPU. I figure I'll be swept away by the extra performance and usability.

If the MBP didn't have an SSD, and I assume it didn't, that alone will blow you away.  Makes everything soooo much snappier™.

Still waiting for word on my order made way, way back on Nov 31.

I've been using an SSD for years. There is no going back once you have an SSD.

In fact, I've been using an SSD for booting and apps plus a HDD for data in my MBP for so long that the RMBP was not even on the table. I was using the Fusion Drive setup but was doing it all manually. As an aside I would really like Apple to make the RMBP with a Fusion Drive.

I've been told 3 to 4 weeks. I think on November 31st they were quoting 4 weeks and then in December simply quoting January. What is your setup that you think it might be taking so long? Did you pay the extra $300,000 to have Jony Ives personally fly to China to make your iMac?

Yeah, SSD is so awesome that it is impossible t consider booting from a regular drive anymore.

I ordered through my local shop here in Japan, not the Apple Store.  The day I ordered the Apple Store online still showed 3-4 weeks; the shop called me back to say their channel said January (with everyone receiving theirs, my hopes were raised a bit so now I'm just gently complaining).  So, I guess they are just low on Apple's priority list!  I like the shop a lot and they need the business (if they closed down then the nearest Apple reseller with knowledgeable staff would be two hours away by bullet train and a hole in my wallet).  This time, I guess I have to wait.

I ordered the 27 with 3.4 i7, 3TB Fusion and shop-installed 16GB RAM.

That's kind of you to support your local shop but Apple will put their direct consumer's before resellers because they get paid less from the resellers. I don't any of them push enough units that Apple will bend over backwards for them over their own stores. We see it hear in the States with the Apple Stores getting a lot more iPhones than cellular stores. I don''t blame them but it also seems unfair, especially those trying to support local businesses.

Why doesn't your bank allow you to make a $2800 purchase? Congrats on finally ordering just the same! It'll be quite likely your iMac will arrive before I can post an iBench test result from my MP, before and after a FD config. So I'd like to see yours.

I had forgotten about the 30". I wonder when they update the Apple Thunderbolt display if they'll go with something larger than today or 27-30" about as large as is feasible for a consumer/prosumer display? For instance, would a 36" Apple Thunderbolt display be too big?

I can make that large purchase when swiping my card but over the internet they limit the value to help protect users, but since I'm auto-protected against fraudulent purchases it really means they lower their risk substantially. Just had to make a quick phone call to let them know I'll be making a $2500* purchase.

* Opted for a couple fewer upgrade options with my new iMac.

Not for me; I'm making 'full' use of my 30" ACD and would simply love an even larger display. I'm still bothered by the fact that they don't make matte screens anymore. But supposedly the new TB Displays are way less glossy as opposed to when they first came out so I need to have a gander. Hee, a gander...

Ah ok. Here they do that as well, but a little different: € 250 max withdraw from ATM, easily upgraded by request form, € 2500 max on PIN payment (yep, not available in the US) and over the internet it's maxed out at your balance, though 5-figure transactions will popup on some bank employee's PC.

That is a good reason to not create ports at the bottom. They could hide the cables behind a chin, similar to some TV's hiding the cable that plug in from the side (can¡t post a picture as they're all Samsung TV's showing this). Or leave the display alone and put the ports in the stand, only needs to be a little thicker at the back - out of sight.

Whilst looking for a pic I saw one for the current cable route:

Of all docks, it does, but I've bought many for my iPods, iPhones and iPad and end up never using them. Since I keep my phone charged by my bed I woudn't use that unless it was at work.
