Apple releases AirPort firmware update to resolve iOS connectivity issues

Apple on Tuesday released a firmware update for all 802.11n-capable AirPort base stations, fixing a number of problems including an issue that prompted some iOS device users to see intermittent Wi-Fi dropouts.

AirPort

Version 7.6.4 of Apple's AirPort base station firmware resolves three major issues seen in the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule.

As mentioned above, the software patches a bug that would intermittently cause a loss of Wi-Fi connectivity for some iOS devices. The problem has been seen before in certain Apple products, like the iPad, usually at time of launch.

In addition to the iOS Wi-Fi fix, the update resolves an issue that could cause an IPv6 Tunnel error.

Specific to the Time Capsule, an error that would cause the device to report back that a backup disk was in use has been fixed.

Users can grab the download via Software Update or Apple's Support Downloads webpage.

Noticed the update this morning. Hope it fixes the problem I had where my iPhone5 was guaranteed to drop its wifi connection to my 2011 Airport Extreme, if I used in a certain spot in my home. That spot was the bathroom of all places. As you can imagine it was pretty annoying.

I even extended my network using a older 2010 Airport Extreme placed in the room next to the bathroom and problem still occurred. Not as much, but it still happened occasionally. I'm guessing there was something installed in the walls of that bathroom that was blocking/interfering with the wifi signal. Its an old apt that was built in the 1930's.

I'll be sure to give it a try later this week to see if the problem has been fixed.

I recently installed a new Time capsule ac wifi and have extended the network with 2 n airport expresses ( the old plugin models). I also received a new MacBook Air, with ac wifi - friggin great, seriously way faster.

Ok, I'll get to the point - I still experience dropouts of wifi, not bad but enough to piss me off and always on mobile devices.

I have updated the firmware in the expresses and will leave it a day or so before posting back.

I just updated my 3rd gen TC last night. I don't get the random iPhone dropouts on the iPhones so far, but the real test is going to be how long it can run before needing to be restarted again (that became a weekly occurrence over the last two months.

Hopefully I don't need a new one...
