Apple changes up colors: 'space gray' comes to iPhone 5s & iPods

Thread Starter
This year's flagship iPhone will no longer come in black and slate, as Apple has instead switched to a lighter shade dubbed "space gray." The same color option is also now available on the iPod touch, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle.

Space Gray

The new "space gray" iPhone 5s will join the silver and gold models when Apple's flagship handset goes on sale next Friday, Sept. 20. Last year, the iPhone 5 was available in white and black.

The change means the iPhone 5s is no longer available in true black, with Apple instead opting to change the aluminum back and sides to a lighter shade of gray. The glass back and front of the device remain black.

The new "space gray" color option is not limited to the iPhone 5s, however: Apple also launched new iPod models on Thursday featuring the new color. Gray versions of the iPod touch, iPod nano and iPod shuffle are all available to purchase from Apple's website.

One device that doesn't come in "space gray" is the newly announced iPhone 5c. Apple has instead opted to take a more colorful approach with its polycarbonate iPhone, with vibrant shades of green, blue, yellow and red being joined by a white option.

First-gen throwback, and I feel fine.

No black 5c was interesting.

Have to see it in person. Last year I pre judged the silver/white before seeing it and I really think It looks nicer than the slate/black.

Maybe this will be a hybrid of the slate and silver ?

I love how when the plastic iPhone is released its called polycarbonate but when talking about any polycarbonate Samsung phone its plastic. And yes, the Samsung Galaxy S4, S3 and Note 2 are all polycarbonate.

I really like the move towards  dedicated processors for specific tasks. Similar to the X8 and S800. It's definitely the future.

I've read every hands-on first impressions review that I could find and I haven't found one that thought the 5C felt cheap or the gold/champagne 5S was gaudy/tacky. Most first impressions I read said the 5C is how you do plastic, smilar to the Lumia's. And all of them said the fingerprint scanning worked perfectly. This is the thing with Apple; they don't do a lot at once but what they do, they do right. I'm sure competitors are and will be out in full force mocking these devices so I hope Apple has ads ready to go. And I hope they continue to ignore the competition in their ads.

It's interesting.  I wonder if Apple will change/offer the iPads in these colors?  Well, specifically, the Space Gray.  I could see a retina Space Gray mini in my hands...

iPhone 5c is a joke imo. Since they differentiate 5s from 5 for new colors, why don't they just keep 5 as a mid-tier? I can understand that they don't need to make 8GB 5c for lower tier because of the 4s, but would it have to be 5c for this year? I don't see Apple selling a lot of iPhone 5c in the next few months with current price scheme and no China mobile carrier subsidy

I think I'll get this gray model; from the renderings on their website it looks nicer to me than the other two. The golden one looks nice, then it looks tacky. And when I come back to the site it looks nice again. It's a toss. Or not; I'll get the grey one. Or do what some 5C shoppers do, get all available colors.

Then how come a Samsung feels plasticy and Apple feels solid, well build, natural? This cannot be fanboyism. I'll take a pepsi smartphone-case test to prove I can tell the difference.

That's news to me... I always saw it advertised as "charcoal."

Be prepared to be shocked shitless before Christmas. The 5C will be a runaway success... Although I find the camera specs on the 5S to be highly tempting come upgrade time!

Get the 5C in white and slip on the black cover for a nice contrast... It really is a nice combo.

I especially liked the oblique reference to Steve Jobs at the end of the article.

I prefer the black style of the previous model:

Maybe it won't show up scuffs so easily but I liked the darker shade.

And nobody realizes that this is likely a direct response to the iPhone 5 scuffing issues at launch?

Maybe because it isn't?

My black/slate 5 has never been in a case. Dropped multiple times. It shows wear all around the front and back bezel as well as chips in the bezel from the drops. It even survived getting rear ended by a drunk driver going 85 while I was going 45. It ended up in my back rear window which paramedics found by calling my phone.

Not sure on gold or space gray but either should show less wear and tear. It will most likely be a game time decision!

As if you would know? Seems to me there's a reason Apple replaced that model with with gray.

Don't take oour word on it... According to The Verge...

This is how you make a plastic phone, though: from the cohesive shell to the smooth and glossy back (which did pick up a fair number of fingerprints) the device feels far better than Samsung’s or LG’s plastic options.

Doesn't matter. When I stick it in an Otterbox, it will be black...

Heh, I honestly never really liked the hint of blue in the 5. It was black, but wasn't really. Ah, to each their own. I do know quite some people who liked the slate like you do.

Nice and shiny!

I've been looking everywhere for this news when the 5S was announced, but not one news site reported on any change to the "black" color!

Finally, I get confirmation that the color is changed. Love it, and definitely brings me back to the old iPhone days.

@kerryb space gray might be the new black, but I think I liked the slightly darker black....

I'm sure that was a big part of it - and a welcome move. One of a few reasons I stuck with the 4s. But I think the 5s may tempt me.

However, there's also stylistic reasons for the change - there's more of a consistency in style with the other 2 colours.

Exactly. Apple doesn't produce crap. Just ignore all the whiners.

A cheap plastic iPhone 5C and some spec bumps with a finger print scanner? Yawn... iOS 7 looks like a new paint job and that's all. Yawn... Apple has seriously lost its mojo! I'll wait for the iOS 7 upgrade on my phone to judge. Seriously looking at Android, at this point, for my upgrade. Had there been a bigger iPhone, I might have thought differently.

No PINK 5c was interesting. Guess it's either Chinese-market only (which would surprise me), or it was a Photoshop job all along, and NowhereelseInsider fell for it.

Me too. Also, easier to cover minor nicks and scratches on the edges with a Sharpie.

I want to see a resistance test where an iPhone 5s is crashed against an S4 repeatedly 50, 100, and 200 times.

Then so the same with the 5c and S4.

That is a fun test to watch

(If it's already been done, please link me up!)

The article is wrong. As TS shows, Apple has it listed as Pink. There is no red phone!!!!

Yeah, I cringed when I finally watched the keynote video for myself. Phil Schiller called it "pink" for crissake. Oddly, in some of the photos and even in Apple's own video, it looks remarkably like mulberry or even a shade redder, and of course the NowhereelseInsider headline (still) says it's RED.

Guess it was legit photo all along. I stand corrected, which is more than this site can say for its headline. ;)

I stand corrected. It's not a bad shade, but it looks rather grapefruity pink, not so much lavendery pink.

I'm due for an upgrade 3 weeks after the 5S becomes available. I've always had the "S" models. Love the gray, but as I always have my phone in a case, slightly disappointed they don't have a gray face.
