US carriers signal launch iPhone 5s inventory will be 'grotesquely' low

Seemingly confirming rumors that Apple will not be able to provide adequate inventory of the iPhone 5s this weekend, a new report reveals that carriers are facing "grotesquely" low inventory for the device's launch.

Preorder

Sources from U.S. carriers who spoke with AllThingsD on Tuesday revealed that they are disappointed by the number of iPhone 5s shipments they are receiving from Apple. Sales of Apple's next flagship handset will begin online Friday at 12:01 a.m. Pacific, while Apple's retail stores will begin selling the iPhone 5s when they open at 8 a.m. local time.

Tuesday's report also revealed that carriers may be seeing less demand for the iPhone 5s than expected. That's attributed to the new mid-range, multi-colored iPhone 5c, which may be proving more popular than some had anticipated.

It's unknown whether Apple is holding the majority of inventory for its own retail stores, or whether the new handset will be spread thin between Apple itself and its carrier partners. Regardless, Apple is not accepting preorders for the iPhone 5s ahead of Friday's launch, a fact that had already suggested to many observers that supply will be limited this weekend.

Preorders for the iPhone 5c did begin last week, and carrier-subsidized models appear to remain in healthy supply from Apple's online store. The new iPhone 5c features many of the same components as last year's iPhone 5, but sports a new polycarbonate back that is available in five colors: green, blue, yellow, red and white.

Well-connected analyst Ming-chi Kuo of KGI Securities revealed last month that the iPhone 5c would out-ship the iPhone 5s in the current quarter. According to Kuo, the iPhone 5s has faced apparent production issues associated with the new Touch ID fingerprint scanner located under the home button.

Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are launching on all four major U.S. carriers this Friday: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. The devices will also be available in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the U.K.

Nice. Let's chop off another $50 from the stock. As if initial supply means ****-all in the grand scheme of things, and the potential total sales. It doesn't. But in this day and age, everyone is an entitled, whiny, spoiled, perspective-lacking child that will rage if they can't get their new shiny on the first possible day.

Tim's folly? Again? Is this a ploy to make us want it even more?

Oh, "grotesquely low". That's different. Now I can squirm when I think "low".

I'll get up at my normal time on Friday morning and if they still have any, I might order one, otherwise I'll just wait a week or so.

Well if it's not accurate it's up to Apple to set the record straight. But I suppose we'll just get more of the "Apple doesn't respond to rumors" BS.

Would they really launch in more countries than the 5 if inventory was so low?

Agree.  I'll be up at 3:01 local.  Hoping that I can order online and pick up in store the same day...probably a long shot.

I suspect carriers phones are more discounted than through say apple.com. Maybe Apple is taking advantage of that, and directing the majority of the initial phones to Apple Stores and store.apple.com.

Anyways, this might lead to an even great number of 5C being sold, which is great news for me as an Apple investor. I expect the 5C profit margin to be at a whole another level than the 5S.

Ya if people only knew of the logistics to ramp up production to iPhone type numbers. Incorporating new parts and processes. I'm surprised it works as well as it does. On the other hand I do want my new iPhone right now 1biggrin.gif

Good question. If these stories are accurate my guess is we won't get any sales figures next week. If they're not accurate I hope Apple sets the record straight before they end up everywhere. The media runs with anything the WSJ or ATD says.

You need to get up at 2:55. Allow time for your "business' and pounce by 3:01.

If I had to guess, this is probably accurate. That fingerprint scanner is probably causing the delays and these phones will be very hard to come by.

sell the 5C you cry baby carriers.

What makes you think this when Apple itself is being very reserved in its positioning of the 5S? It isn't FUD but rather rational responses to the data at hand.

But a lot or people want the 5S. Hopefully we don't have an iMac situation. If the 5S is unavailable I could see the competition taking advantage. 1hmm.gif

If I start rumors or speculation about you is it then your responsibility to set the record straight? Apple could spend forever responding to rumors. Competitors could play 20 questions to get an advantage.

I think Apple handles rumors right.

Of course stock is low according to carriers. Apple will sell a gazillion 5S's so the carriers would prefer to have as many as possible.

I am sure this is just bs rumors spread by people that are short selling Apple stock. We will have more clarity next week what is going on. The demand for the iPhone 5 s will be sky high and Apple will be able to meet it,  I am sure of it.

Let's think logically about this. There is a reason 5S' aren't available for preorder. The fingerprint scanner is very new technology that probably has never been produced at a scale this large. It's not crazy to think that they have a short supply of these models.

Luckily my local Apple Store is setting one aside for me :-)

Is "grotesquely" low worse than "low"???

It's a$$hats like these folks that will scream "Apple is doomed" if it takes more than 5 minutes to sell out of the 5S.

How can you use grotesquely" low inventory and "less.. than expected demand" in the same story?

I am pleasantly annoyed at this.

Usually we just call our carrier and we get it when we get it. This time is different since there are no pre-orders and horrible because I sold my 4S and relying on an old Treo. Can we order online and arrange pickup at a store later? If we can is this available both at Verizon as well as my local Apple store?

Thanks.

But as others have asked, then why didn't Apple limit sales to US initially instead of, for the first time, making them available in China simultaneously.  That decision suggests that Apple does have sufficient stock to handle the initial surge reasonably well.

Stock outs at the carrier retail locations are bad news though.  My experience buying an iPhone at a Verizon store a few years ago wasn't pleasant.  They tried to talk me out of the iPhone in favor of some other device.  Some (hopefully small) percentage of people who head to a non-Apple store to get the new iPhone will walk out with some other brand of phone if they are out of iPhones (plus an overpriced bundle of crappy accessories).

it must be nice to have someone on the inside, I didn't see anyone waiting outside our local apple store yet, so still hope for picking one up locally , we shall see
