Apple's Oct. 22 iPad event likely to overshadow Microsoft Surface 2 launch, Nokia announcement

Thread Starter
With Apple apparently set to unveil a new fifth-generation iPad and second-generation iPad mini at a media event in less than two weeks, the company will draw away the eyes of the tech world as Microsoft and Nokia attempt to drum up interest in their own competing devices on the very same day.

Microsoft already announced its Surface 2 lineup last month, with the new hardware set to go on sale Oct. 22. As it turns out, Apple is expected to hold an event that same day to announce its own next-generation tablets, products that will likely become available to purchase on Nov. 1, if past launch schedules are any indication.

Oct. 22 is also the same day that Nokia is scheduled to hold an event in Dubai where it is expected to introduce its own tablet hardware.

The scheduling overlap sets Apple up to steal a considerable amount of thunder from its competitors, who are trying to gain a foothold in the tablet market currently dominated by the iPad.

This month's iPad event isn't the first time Apple has scheduled a media blitz that conflicts with its competition. This year's Sept. 10 announcement of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c drew attention away from the IFA Berlin show, where a number of tech companies announced new products, including Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 handset and Galaxy Gear smart watch.

Last year, Microsoft's first-generation Surface products ? and its Windows 8 desktop operating system ? became available on Oct. 26. That was just three days after the iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad were announced by Apple, and a week before both devices became available for purchase.

For the last two years, Apple has settled into a pattern of announcing new iPhones in September and new iPads in October. The events are typically held on a Tuesday, with product availability occurring the Friday of the following week.

Having your launch on the same day as an Apple launch is probably a bad idea.

Apple doesn't pick announcement dates to overshadow the competition.  Their products themselves overshadow their competitors.  Apple's events overshadow everything for days in either direction.

At the moment it is making gratis advertisement for the Nokia event.

One should say: "Thank you Apple !"

Strange decision on the part of Microsoft. That Apple would release the new iPads on this date is hardly a suprise, Apple is if anything consitent with regards to product announcements.

One can only assume that the person who chose this date is a dilussional idiot.... I'm guessing Steve Balmer made the decision.

By the way, it looks like that there's not going to be any black iPad this year, which is what I was wanting, so I guess that I see a gold iPad 64 GB or 128 GB in my future! It'll be mine! My precious!

Trying to get that post count up? Seriously, sometimes you just need to wait a second or two for it to show up.

Exactly what I was thinking! Free wide-scale publicity for a company venturing into the tablet space for the first time is probably quite helpful for Nokia.

While thinking they could overshadow the Apple announcement/release....STILL delusional just like last year.  But last year was a bit of a surprise by Apple updating the iPad.

A press release from a lemonade stand would generate about as much interest as the Surface 2 announcement -- at least locally.

I don't think it matters about the date clash. Apple is launching on the 22nd October. Microsoft already launched theirs last month.

Announced and launched are 2 different things.

Ballmer should borrow some half naked girls from Samsung to get some attention ... same as Samsung does!!

Haven't seen any leaks of a full-sized gold.  You might be stuck with silver/white and space gray/black.

I think we'll see those 2 colors on the full-sized iPad- w/ a fingerprint scanner, A7X, 8mp camera, and 2 gb ram.

Unfortunately, I think we'll see all 3 colors on the iPad Mini- w/ a fingerprint scanner, A7X, 8mp camera 1 gb ram... and no Retina.

The pitch will be that it is substantially faster (would actually be over 4x faster) and get the new hardware to overshadow the no retina.  Just my gut telling me.... so I'm basically thinking like an analyst.

Man I hope I'm wrong.....

It used to be that other companies would ignore Apple. For the media, Apple would barely be given a notice on either their business pages or a tech page (if they had one). As Apple begin rising in importance, other companies started to plan their announcements just before Apple's announcements to take away the impact of what Apple would share.

Today, Apple has become such a monster that people care little about the announcements of the others. The others get little mention in the media or perhaps a notice on either their business pages or a tech page (if they have one). Meanwhile, Apple gets attention on front pages, opinion pages, and business pages or tech pages for days.

Interesting turn around.

Why would the mini need an x series chip if it didn't have retina? Personally I would be more excited about the A7 than retina.

You might be right about there not being a full sized gold iPad. I'll just choose a color after I see the keynote. I wanted a black one, because I like how my black Mini looks and feels.

I don't think that Apple is going to put the same CPU and the same camera in both the large iPad and the Mini. I'm also not sure about there being a Touch ID sensor on the Mini, but I suppose that we'll all know for sure soon enough in a couple of weeks. The Mini does cost a bit less than the large iPad, so I don't think that it would be a good idea for Apple to have the Mini as powerful as the large iPad.

Quite aside from setting themselves up for a fall in competing with an Apple announcement, what are Microsoft/Nokia thinking about in competing with each other?

Why did you want to double down on his double-posting and help it show up 4 times? Sometimes, you need to wait a sec or 2 for common sense to show up before jumping on something.

True- no need for the 7X if no retina. Thanks for pointing that out. I'd prefer an A6X and retina over an A7. But honestly- I'd prefer an A7x and retina and jump the price up. $399 is fine with me. Well worth it.

The headlines always remove attribution, so they read:
"...seen as..."
"...likely to..."
"...predicted to..."

Guys, it's noise. Delicious noise.

worse… announcing your launch day 6 weeks in advance is history repeating itself.

2009 5 weeks prior to release microsoft leaks prices of new zune HD (http://gizmodo.com/5334331/zune-hd-prices-leaked-16gb-for-220-32gb-for-290)

2009 Week before Zune HD release… Apple iPod Touch undercuts all Zune HD prices… http://techcrunch.com/2009/09/09/the-incredible-shrinking-ipod-prices-undercut-the-zune-hd/)

- Jobs returns from sabbatical to deliver keynote

- Major Nano upgrade

- Major iPod Touch upgrade and lowered prices

- New iTunes (Genius Mode),

- new iOS release updating Music Player iTunes, and App Store

(of course, the next day, Apple shares dropped 1%)

Sept 15, 2009… Zune HD released… yawn.

Fool me twice… must be Ballmer….

The gold -- really, champagne -- is simply exquisite. I really hope they have that on the iPad too.

I'm really digging the space gray iPad. That might be the one I go for.

I'm interested to see what Nokia has planned for a tablet as long as it doesn't run Android or Windows.

I'm thinking that Apple did this on purpose. If I remember correctly, this isn't the first time its happened. If Microsoft were smart though, they'd either release their products earlier, or wait another week or so. Nobody will even be talking about Microsoft on the 22nd, even if they release new products. It will be like a back page story. Apple has enough good stuff to release at this event to where this is all people will be talking about.
