During development, Apple's gold iPhone 5s was jokingly called the 'Kardashian'

Thread Starter
Apple employees had a humorous nickname for the gold iPhone 5s as they were planning to release the new color option: They called it "The Kardashian Phone."

Style

The nickname, in honor of socialite Kim Kardashian, was first revealed by New York Times reporter Nick Bilton this week on his Twitter account. The information was later corroborated by TechCrunch, though reporter Matthew Panzarino seemed somewhat embarrassed by the proceedings.

"We confirmed the nickname with our sources. Yes, we asked this question of our sources," he wrote.

There are companies that re-color Apple devices, like the iPhone, to give customers a unique device. Kardashian herself was among those who obtained a gold iPhone 5, and boasted about it on Twitter.

December 7, 2012

Apple this year changed up the color options with its flagship iPhone model, for the first time offering a new gold option. The iPhone 5s does not come in black, like the iPhone 5 did, but is instead available in "space gray" and white.

Early indications suggest the gold iPhone 5s has been a smash hit, with availability of the device extremely limited in the face of what is presumably strong demand.

I call it my Persian phone. Actually, it is amazingly subtle and well done—not the gaudy, nouveau riche bauble I feared. Now I need to find a minimal clear bumper to avoid "hiding its light under a bushel."

Conan called it: http://youtu.be/n7-RetY7fGo

LOL people should just enjoy whatever phone they prefer and stop being d-bags about other phones they don't use. Fanboys are pathetic, regardless of whether they are Android or Apple ones.

Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac disputes this claim

My sources who provided in-depth, accurate details about the iPhone 5s say they never heard the "Kardashian Phone" name in any form.

Her iPhone 5 that was custom gold is gaudy- nothing like the 5s. Shocker.

Yes- she's trashy. Can't stand the woman. But she had a bad body 5 years ago- or whenever her "claim to fame" tape came out? I think not. She was smokin' back then.
Now being pregnant- not so much. She's got volcano body... Once it starts erupting- there's no stopping it.

That kind of says it all. Even Apple realized this was just pandering to the masses, and not typical to their usual standards. I seriously doubt if Jony Ive was ever OK with this.

Yeah Conan definitely called it, I love the way the rest of the team try to distance themselves from the "Gold" team. LOL

Sorry, but this is just not what I have come to expect of Apple. At least if they were going to do it, they did it right, in true Apple form, compared to the recent Samsung plastic gold release.

Based on that statement, I "seriously doubt" you know what authority the Senior VP for Design has over product decisions.

I wonder if the Ks will try to sue Apple like Carl Sagan did.  (For those too young to remember: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc._litigation#Libel_dispute_with_Carl_Sagan)

The gold phone in the tweet is not a gold iPhone 5s. It%u2019s a 5 that she had colored by a third party last year.

Why do people believe everything they read? I just posted a tweet from someone who questions the accuracy of this.

Explain to me exactly how the champagne gold is pandering, and who exactly its pandering to?

now I want a different color!

So, when can we expect a video of the gold iPhone copping some sweet lovin' with a 'space grey' one?

I prefer the Kardashian one. Not a fan of the while bezel, but black/gold looks pretty good.

I don't know who Kim Kardashian is, someone famous for being famous sounds like. I wonder how long the gold iPhone will be produced, if it's a permanent fixture or just until the iPhone 6? Because gold doesn't have the timelessness of black and white, it seems like something that might come and go in popularity.

She's originally famous for her "water sports" s3x tape.

Her entire family is pulling a train behind her fame. Literally "behind", as in her mountainous one . . .

Apologies for TMI. I haven't seen the vid in question, but apparently it's up on pirate bay . .

Hmmm.... I am sure all the snotty product/marketing geniuses here must be devastated and dumbstruck that they aren't the ones making decisions at Apple.

All I can say is, thank God. 1rolleyes.gif

Oh, come on.

I guess Apple was “pandering to butt head astronomers” when they released the Power Macintosh 7100, huh?

Ah thanks, now I know. It's amazing that someone can get famous just for that.

Not sure anything is timeless.
This is the first time the iPhone has not been available in black.

That is the best Apple video parody.  It starts out so sincere, until Raffi Jaharian shows up.

Have you seen the followup video?

actually IMO speaking about that tape, she is not all ugly, her "va-jj" is beautiful...
problem is (barring meeting her in public) she is ironically low-class... not sure if she is doing this for her fans... to make them feel better.

who puts out a sex tape and expects to be thought of as high-class?. Porn-star's want respect, but they don't think that they are high-class...

whereas Kim coud be high class, but everything she does that is reported by the "gossips" and by TMZ and on that Insipid show makes her look un-classy....

How many of you are so good looking that you can judge others to be ugly?

Wait, this is just the “critics have to be chefs” argument worded differently.

As someone who has a deep hatred for the vacuous world of celebrity culture as well as those who derive their self-esteem from making off-hand, scathing comments about celebrities (and in doing so, simply end up fueling the absurdity), this thread makes me sick to my stomach.  Maybe Jobs was right...

I think you miss the issue. Talking about women's looks and body parts is beneath contempt regardless of one's own looks.

Personally, it is a tasteless stereotype for a group of men (let's not pretend otherwise) to sit in front of their computers and talk down women based on the size of their body parts. It is just as bad as the racial stereotypes mentioned here whenever Samsung or other Asian companies are mentioned. I wonder how many of you speak like this when you are in public or around your wives, sisters, daughters and mothers.

Grow up.

I'd think the rumoured 5" iPhone would be called the Kardashian because a 5" phone is a big ass phone.

Yup, some women do it to others as well (including those who should know better from life experience).  I never let cr*p like that go by in a conversation unchallenged -- even when my late mother said it.  The more we *shug*, the more we're passively accepting the concept that women's bodies should fit some nonsensical "ideal".  Which, of course, changes depending on the culture and time period (i.e. is arbitrary and largely based on groupthink).

And yes, I do have personal preferences -- I just don't feel the need to beat my chest and try to convince others of them in order to feel more secure (or whatever the reason is that some people think everyone else needs to hear about it).

Yeah, that’s nowhere near the point.

How not?

It pisses me off that it's ok to say a woman's butt is too big without even a second thought about it.  And then fein shock and awe when young girls commit suicide because they were born with a body type that others around them feel the need to make such comments about.  Or when mothers consider the same after their body changes due to having a child.

At any company I'm fairly sure it would be impossible to prove someone DIDN'T have a nickname that wasn't necessarily the Company policy.

Source for nickname; programmers and support.
